An entire book could be devoted to the wonders and marvels of French Meadow. Quickly, let us say that Lynn Gordon opened this foremother of all things organic in the Twin Cities as an all-organic, yeast-free bakery in 1985. Eventually she added a café with an emphasis on counter-service cooked-to-order delights like buoyant pancakes, chock-full-of-treats quiches, and legendarily satisfying soups (vegan, vegetarian, and rib-sticking-with-meat varieties). Then in 2001, dinner table-service debuted. Now the busy building is all things to all people: One of the best bakeries in the country, one of the best places to get a pancake on a Thursday morning, one of the best neighborhood restaurants for dinner--guess it just shows that good karma really is a cosmic force.
Eric Austin strolls into French Meadow Cafe and takes a seat behind a candlelit table. He peruses the menu, more out of habit than necessity. This is one of his favorite local dining spots—a "chef's restaurant," he calls it—and he already knows... More »

A hamburger is straightforward--a hunk of cooked beef on a bun--but a veggie burger is a more malleable thing. A recent episode of Future Food proved it, serving veggie burgers made not just from vege... More »

Although French Meadow isn't exclusively a vegetarian restaurant, it's very veggie friendly and, dare we say, even vegan-friendly. There's a rotating vegan soup of the day; sometimes it's black bean chili, sometimes it's a stew. If you do dairy, do the roasted vegetable sandwich, overflowing with roasted portobello, red peppers, caramelized onions, arugula, and a creamy goat cheese-herb spread served on homemade ciabatta bread. An egg salad sandwich, served on healthy hemp bread with Havarti... More »
Fluffy pancakes in the morning, hearty soups and sandwiches at lunch, organic artisan breads all day, every day. And now expert, fancy gourmet dinners at night with worldwide wines and beer. What, pray tell, is there not to be in love with at French Meadow these days? Someone should give owner and founder Lynn Gordon a medal; it's as if she's seen into the hearts of all of south Minneapolis and come through to fill each and every need. Cheap dates? Check--that famous vegan chili. Solo... More »
If bread is the foundation of civilization, then maybe we're not all going to hell in a hand basket. Because man, we sure have a lot of great loaves! The best, perhaps, is the Twin Cities' first: the French Meadow baguette. It's of sourdough origin, substantially chewy, and wheaten with a slight tang. We mention this only because the bread is the stuff upon which French Meadow's menu is built, from thick slabs of French toast, levain piled high with grilled tuna, or ciabatta stuffed with... More »
The French Meadow's tempeh Reuben ($7.50) has long been the subject of vegetarian cult worship, with its seared, sparrow-brown rye crusts, chewy, salty center of piquant Swiss cheese, biting sauerkraut, and perfectly spicy sauce. Hell, meat eaters have even been known to cross over in pursuit of the thing. Then they rolled out table-service dinner with a wine list (many organic), beer, all the beloved vegetarian soups and salads, and entrées like pan-fried udon noodles with... More »
