Buying a loaf (or two) of the Franklin Street Bakery’s artisan breads will make you feel better about loading up on their decadent red velvet cupcakes and heaps of like-mom-made peanut butter cookies. Cakes like the popular lemon vanilla bean or raspberry white chocolate torte can be made to order and won’t dent your wallet (think $30 or so), and seasonal baked goods rotate regularly. But you don’t need a special occasion to stop in at the open, airy bakery for a breakfast cinnamon roll or a made-to-order deli sandwich. Just be sure to grab a sixer of mini-cookies for the road. As a four-time winner of the City Pages Best Bakery, it’s impossible -- or at least ill-advised -- to leave empty-handed.

The chewy chocolate meringue has a glossy crackle on top and goes crunch just before it starts to melt on your tongue. The apple pecan coffee cake tastes like it's from the best church-basement fellowship brunch ever. The cupcakes are light, petite, almost silky, and topped with swirls of buttery frosting that stay just this side of decadent. The cakes ($27.50 to $32.50 for a decorated eight-inch round) are classic, elegant, and refined. (Who needs an oversized, overstuffed, over-the-top... More »
Pastry that looks too good to eat? Well, it probably is. But at Franklin Street Bakery, the trays of scones, tarts, and muffins are irresistible precisely because they are not egg-washed and jellied to perfection. Instead each is a crusty, browned, homey individual. And Franklin Street offers something that practically nobody else in town does: savory pastries. Chewy individual brioches topped with mushrooms and Gruyère. Hearty focaccia rounds with caramelized onions. Pint-sized... More »
