Description

Benjamin Roberts, the man in charge of the cheese shop at France 44 so abhors the product-mishandling he's witnessed at upscale grocers--fragile, living, breathing cheeses tightly wrapped in plastic instead of a porous cheese paper--he's penned several "cheese abuse" diatribes on his blog (france44.blogspot.com, and he Twitters, too). While some might find this a little extreme, we love a specialty-shop personality who's especially persnickety, but not at all snobbish, about his wares. Roberts brings in a lot of his cheeses direct from producers and cuts them to order, so when you're buying a special cheese--the Hook's seven-year cheddar you already love, or the French Massipou that Roberts knows you will--it'll be in top condition. And if you're having trouble making a decision, he'll happily help you sample a few picks from the case. Roberts also sells the city's best selection of domestic bean-to-bar artisan chocolates along with a slew of other gourmet goods such as La Quercia prosciutto, along with house-made refrigerated and frozen deli items and (our fave) the duck confit. If you want to indulge in your purchases right at the shop, take a seat at one of the tables and the staff will bring out platters and stemware and serve it to you.

  • 2010 | BEST CHEESE SHOP

Sample a few of the France 44 Cheese Shop's wares and you'll understand why a wheel of the stuff might cost more than your car: One bite can have as much complexity as an entire meal. Take the Dutch L'Amuse, a two-year aged Gouda: It smells like a barn, tastes like a peat bog, and chews like a hanger steak. Or the Swiss aged Gruyère, imbedded with the captivating little micro-crunches caused by crystallized amino acids. There's nothing like 'em on mainstream supermarket shelves. But... More »

  • 2010 | BEST WINE SHOP

Wine today, even for those on a budget, isn't about picking up a bottle of Two Buck Chuck. The growth in interest--and an ever-expanding roster of quality wineries--means you have a great chance of finding a new, exciting taste. But the sheer number of wines can also be overwhelming. Enter France 44, which carries a monstrous inventory of more than 4,500 wines from 17 countries, but has a staff eager to help you find just the right bottle for your palate and budget, whether you're... • 2009 | Best Cheese Shop

Benjamin Roberts, the man in charge of the cheese shop at France 44 (it replaced the former restaurant about a year ago) so abhors the product-mishandling he's witnessed at upscale grocers--fragile, living, breathing cheeses tightly wrapped in plastic instead of a porous cheese paper--he's penned several "cheese abuse" diatribes on his blog (france44.blogspot.com, and he Twitters, too). • 2008 | BEST WINE STORE

At first glance, France 44 looks like a typical wine shop, with thousands of bottles arranged on shelves, grouped by type or region. But as soon as you discover all the programs, classes, clubs, and the Friday and Saturday tastings, you'll agree with Wine Spectator's trade magazine, Market Watch, that France 44 is "a new leader in retail." Downstairs, France 44 has an entire room devoted to high-end wines, and another one for high-end spirits, in case you're in the market for a $500 bottle... More »

France 44's Cheese Shop has lunch covered

    | Tue, April 13, 2010

Cheese is badass. In fact, I've seen T-shirts from my friends at Heidi's (tear) proclaiming that "cheese is the new black" --and I believe it. Though the Cities have many great cheese shops, France 44... More »

    Al Fresco, Refreshed

Several years ago, at the invitation of a friend who lived in a once-swank sky rise, I set out for a picnic in Loring Park. It was late spring and we set up our impromptu lunch near that strange fountain on the east side of the park that looks li... More »
