  • Description

You won’t have to wait until this fall to discover why the Miami Art Museum (MAM) is being rechristened with a mega-benefactor’s name. “Frames of Reference,” on view at MAM (101 W. Flagler St., Miami), features 45 works of Latin American art from the Jorge M. Pérez collection and marks the museum’s swan song in its current space before reopening at its snazzy Herzog & de Meuron-designed digs on the bay. The show offers an expansive taste of the $40 million cash and art haul the local real estate developer donated to the institution, which will resume business at its new location as the Pérez Art Museum Miami later this year in honor of his gift. Pérez donated 110 works to MAM in total; altogether, the work is valued at $20 million and reflects a significant portion of his art holdings. “With Jorge Pérez’s generous gift to our collection, we are able to share the work of some of history’s most important Latin American artists,” Thom Collins, MAM’s director, says. On view are artworks reflecting seminal moments in Latin American art history by names such as José Bedia, Beatriz González, Wifredo Lam, Diego Rivera, and Joaquín Torres García, Collins adds.
