Description

The building that houses Four Peaks Brewery was once home to a dairy. That was a long time ago, though. This Tempe institution has been serving food and handcrafted suds in their unique 1892 Mission-style warehouse since 1996. Four Peaks' popularity has grown over the years, which is why you'll likely be halted at the door by business-like hostesses on any weekend night. Even with the expansion of the indoor dining room, it's still packed. Four Peaks is a well-regarded brewer with an extensive bottling operation, and you can try all eight of their year-round beers on tap at all times, along with whatever seasonal brew hasn't yet been chugged down by growler-wielding die-hards. The place is always bustling during happy hour, but half-off beers make it worth the wait. Bar food aplenty and scads of flat-screens let you watch the game inside, and the shady patio is perfect for outside day-drinking before the masses show up.

Four Peaks is one of my favorite brewing companies in Arizona. They make the Kilt Lifter, after all. We don't visit this location often, as we live close to the Four Peaks in North Scottsdale, but when we are in Tempe, we like to see the brewery. They are ALWAYS packed, so expect to wait for a table. Oh, and don't go in the summer. They do not have AC. They have several fans keeping the air moving, but if it is hot outside, it is REALLY hot inside. Fun atmosphere, though. If you like good beer, good food, and a fun college atmosphere, check this place out. It's worth it for the beer alone! If you haven't had Four Peaks before, order a flight. If you have, order a Kilt Lifter... or a Peach Ale. Your call! Cheers.

  • 2012 | Best Brewery

Four Peaks seems to have winning down to a science. At the 2011 Great American Beer Festival, the brewery's American IPA, Hop Knot, took home the bronze; at the 2012 World Beer Cup, it claimed the gold, along with its Kolsch, SunBru. Four Peaks was the only Arizona brewery honored in the World Beer Cup's judging competition -- actually coming within half a medal of winning Champion Mid-size Brewery and Brewmaster -- and was ranked among the top 50 craft brewers in terms of sales... • 2011 | Best Non-Smoking Patio

Ahh, there is nothing like relaxing on a patio while drinking one of your favorite beers and noshing on a plate of cheese puffs on a crisp autumn day -- and then your neighbor has to go and ruin it by lighting up a dirty cigarette. We hate when that happens! It won't happen at Four Peaks -- the brewery's expansive tree-shaded patio is 100 percent smoke-free before midnight. It's rare to find a patio in the Valley that wasn't built with the smoker in mind, but if you smoke on the... More »

  • 2011 | Best Local Beer

Admittedly, we liked Four Peaks' American IPA well enough before. What's not to like? It's made with seven different hops added at different times in the brewing process to combine in piney, grassy harmony. It's bitter but not biting, and it's backed by mild honey sweetness. It smells and tastes like a bowl of hop nuggets. We were just fine with enjoying the brew from the tap or the occasional bottle picked up from the brewery. And then they put it in cans, which turns out to like painting... More »

  • 2011 | Best Use of a Pumpkin

We can't think of another beer more anticipated then Four Peaks' seasonal Pumpkin Porter. In fact, we know people who actually plan their Arizona vacations around its release. Every year, we count down the days 'til the outstanding blend of sweet pumpkins, roasted malt, and a touch of cinnamon and nutmeg shows up on the towering blackboard of beers at this popular Tempe brew house. Not only does it taste amazing, but it has the power to turn just about everybody in town into lovers of craft... More »

  • 2011 | Best Secret Bathroom

Many have gone in search of the secret bathroom at Four Peaks in Tempe. Most have failed. Worry not, though; they were really drunk. Should you find yourself adventurous (and needing to release the floodgates), the entrance to the secret bathroom might be yours. Look first for the beaded curtain leading seemingly to nowhere. Behind this tacky cover is the entrance to an immaculate bathroom complete with a row of urinals and a sink. Such a pristine example of a brew house outhouse is this... More »

  • 2010 | Best Happy Hour, Tempe

Happy hours should be crowded, loud, and a bit obnoxious. Your server should give you something to look at besides the rounds she's hoisting. The food should be delicious and, maybe, a little bad for you. Happy hour is where we gather to say, "Yeah, I sat and drilled away for The Man all day, too. But I could stick it to him if I wanted." As proof, we sit and drink pint after pint and eat our nachos when it's not even dark outside! What better place to participate in the renewal than Tempe... More »

  • 2009 | Best Local Beer for a Novice Drinker

Ah, beer: the most humble and refreshing form of recuperation after the daily beatdown that is your job. Just gather your friends and head to a bar for a happy hour (or two). What? Your friends don't like beer? Teach them the error of their ways, starting with the Peach Ale at Four Peaks. Forget hoppy goodness and the power of top-fermenting (that's for real drinkers). Instead, surprise them with the light peach notes of this sumptuous brew. Who knows? Maybe next time they'll want to try an... More »

  • 2009 | Best Shake

Was it serendipity or just an act of pure, calculated genius? We have no idea who invented the beer shake or how they came up with such a cleverly yummy concoction, but we'd sure love to give them a high five. Four Peaks Brewery serves the perfect dessert for beer lovers like us: the Oatmeal Stout Shake. It's pretty much exactly what you'd imagine -- ice-cold Oatmeal Stout (a dark beer that's rich and creamy enough on its own) swirled into a frothy treat with vanilla ice cream. Even... More »

  • 2008 | Best Sports Bar, Tempe

It took us a long time to choose this one. The Arizona Cardinals' (and subsequent Fiesta Bowl and Super Bowl) exodus from Sun Devil Stadium left Tempe without the sports scene the East Valley was accustomed to. Longtime game-day favorites like McDuffy's and Bandersnatch vanished and, apparently, locals were left without a good gathering place. We should know -- we grew up here and visited five of Tempe's so-called best sports bars before choosing Four Peaks Brewery. If you live in Tempe... More »

  • 2008 | Best Bar Food

These guys really stepped it up. Four Peaks could've easily coasted on the reputation of its award-winning beer, but instead, the local brewpub serves up delectable dishes that are noteworthy in their own right. Rounding out a classic array of burgers, beer-battered fries, wings and nachos, there's a surprising assortment of internationally inspired eats, from Thai hummus to fresh-baked Bavarian pretzels to shrimp and goat cheese bruschetta. Other highlights include handmade pizzas, the Tap... More »

  • 2007 | BEST NEIGHBORHOOD BAR, TEMPE

Tempe is an entire city of neighborhood bars, so narrowing it down to one is no easy feat. But there's just something about Four Peaks -- maybe it's that amazing spinach artichoke dip or the fact that they brew their beer on- site, or the excellent preservation of the building's mission revival style, and its location on Tempe's historic old Eighth Street. Most likely it's some combination of the three. There's something really cool about walking past the grain silo in the parking lot... More »

  • 2006 | BEST BREW PUB

Is there such a thing as a slow night at Four Peaks? Not as far as we can tell. ASU populates this place with young faces, but the draw goes well beyond this quiet residential neighborhood. It's easy to understand why. Eight house-made beers on tap, including the popular Kilt Lifter ale and Oatmeal Stout, plus a rotating seasonal menu of more than two dozen different brews, equals suds galore for connoisseurs and social drinkers alike. Add that to the perpetual buzz of conversation and... More »

  • 2005 | BEST MEAL IN THE BACK OF A BREWERY

When a friend invited us to join him for dinner at Four Peaks, we went willingly. We've eaten the burgers at Four Peaks before; the prospect of another was a happy one. We didn't wind up with a hamburger, but we were still thrilled. Who would have thought that there, in the back of Four Peaks, with a Suns game blaring in the background, we'd have one of the best meals of the year? Every so often, the folks at Four Peaks break out and get their culinary groove on, in a big way. In this case,... More »

  • 2001 | Best Bar Food

No soggy mozzarella sticks or oily potato skins here. Four Peaks offers imaginative appetizers like Arizona chicken rolls (pastry-wrapped chicken, cheese and chiles) and spanakopita (phyllo dough stuffed with spinach, cheese, pine nuts and dill). The soups are homemade, and the salads come with a distinctive sweet jalapeņo dressing. Other too-good-to-be-bar snacks include the Bleu Light Special Burger, topped with an amazing amount of tangy bleu cheese; the portabella veggie beer-bread sa... More »

  • 2000 | Best Brew Pub

This is getting annoying. Four Peaks is the Tiger Woods of Valley brew pubs, consistently topping every local publication's "best of" lists despite facing ever-increasing competition. This year, the Tommyknockers Brewery & Pub chain opened a franchise near Bank One Ballpark, and damn, it was a close call. But Four Peaks' malty stout, its airheaded blonde and smoky-smooth amber triumphed once again. How do they keep winning? One year -- and beer -- at a time.Readers' Choice: Four Peaks... More »
