If you're going to spring several bucks for a coffee these days, it ought to be perfectly made and served in an interesting coffeehouse space. Four Barrel in the Mission District qualifies on both counts: Staff roast their own beans and serve the classic Italo-French lineup of espressos, macchiatos, and lattes (go elsewhere for your ice-blended mochachinos), and the large lofty room boasts long, sleek, sculptural tables; arty installations (including a lineup of animal heads); and a counter of light snacks including croissants and Dynamo Donuts. If you're going to spring a few bucks for coffee these days, not only should the brew be made from the best possible ingredients, but the space it's served in should also invite you to linger. The massive, high-ceilinged, loftlike room that houses Four Barrel Coffee features long, sleek, sculptural wood tables cleverly affixed to the walls so that they appear to balance on one leg, an intriguing and arty installation of lengths of lumber along one wall, and a row of animal heads overlooking...
