This elegant Victorian mansion, long known for its classic French fare, was starting to feel a bit stuffy before it was purchased by corporate food-service guru Bruce Taher, who also owns the Wayzata and Nordeast Eateries. Chef Donald Gonzales, formerly of Chambers Kitchen, has modernized and globalized the seasonally changing menu, which features an updated (and even more delicious) version of Forepaugh's famed beef Wellington, and he has included everything from Thai curry to an elegant take on the Canadaian bar snack poutine. Your selection from the wine list will be delivered from the new glass-encased wine cellar tucked into the limestone-walled basement. Despite all the remakes and renovations, one thing hasn't changed: The place is still supposedly inhabited by a ghost named Molly, the alleged lover of the mansion's original owner, Joseph Forepaugh, who hung herself from a chandelier.
Admittedly, we're not exactly on par with Canada when it comes to the availability of poutine. In fact in Quebec, where the dish is said to have originated, you can order a side of the cheese-curd and... More »

For years, Forepaugh's restaurant, located in a Victorian mansion near downtown St. Paul, felt like an elegant shut-in who was quite a gal in bygone days. Her couture was frilly wallpaper and molded ceilings. Her fare was classic French. In her... More »
Forepaugh's 276 S. Exchange St., St. Paul; 224-5606 Molly doesn't want to leave. And frankly, who can blame her? One moment she's the life of the household, living in a mansion on gorgeous Irvine Park, surrounded by finery and luxury, the... More »
Everyone knows how to set the mood for romance: a lit fireplace in a private nook, candlelight, fine wine, haute cuisine, and a ghost. St. Paul's Forepaugh's is right on point. Since its top-to-bottom renovation two years ago, the historic restaurant has tried to downplay the ghost (legend has it a former maid, Molly, in love with the original master of the house, Joseph Forepaugh, haunts the third floor where she hung herself in the late 1800s), but it sacrifices nothing of the other... Considering the wonders that pastry chef Carrie Summer works in her mobile trailer, Chef Shack, it's no surprise that the sweets she creates in a full-size kitchen are our favorite in the Twin Cities. Summer, formerly of Cue, Spoonriver, and several lauded coastal restaurants, designs all the desserts for Bruce Taher's restaurants: the Wayzata, Alaska, and Nordeast Eateries, plus the flagship, Forepaugh's. In the restaurant's venerable St. Paul mansion, Summer presents several familiar... More »
