Despite its name and pro-veggie policy, Flore Vegan Cuisine in Silver Lake has an extensive menu that’ll lure in just about anyone. Breakfast is served until 1 p.m. for late-morning stragglers hungry enough to enjoy veggie frittatas, griddle cakes and tofu scrambles, all wheat- and gluten-free. Pair your dish with a whole-leaf tonic (names of these include Feeling Better and Stomach Relief). Salads are for the timid; hearty appetites are better off ordering the tempeh meatloaf burger or tempeh reuben, or maybe one of the many pizzas prepared with soy cheese on a cornmeal crust. This being L.A., the menu also includes several Mexican dishes, from jicama tacos to Southwestern seitan quesadillas. Boutique cupcakes, even the vegan kind, are so passé. Instead, top off your meal with a strawberry shortcake or blueberry cheesecake.

In the heart of Silver Lake, on the other end of the hipster spectrum from the Golden Bridge's spiritual village, is Flore, which boasts cute, grungy, rock & roll waiters and an eclectic array of vegan dishes. My favorite: the Tempeh Tu-No Melt, a food-combining train wreck of tempeh salad and cashew cheese on toasted seeded bread. It's hot, it's messy, it's sweet, it's savory — it's a perfectly orgasmic combination of texture and taste, and I'm salivating just thinking about it. —Dani Katz
I've been to Flore twice, both times were dismal experiences. The last time, I had their special: Tempeh Enchaladas. They tasted like they'd been reheated 10 to 20 times: very dry, old, and tasteless. I went with 3 other people and I tried all of their dishes: club, tempeh tuna, and portobello sandwiches. The "tuna" was the best but I wouldn't order any of them, as they were fatty, tasteless, and uninspired. The service was the only thing worse than the food as the waiter was bored and unattentive.

On Sundays, Flore Vegan Cuisine offers an all-you-can-eat vegan brunch for $10, tax included. Served buffet style, it makes for the perfect post-hangover meal. The menu varies, but mainstays are tofu scramble, "sausage," "bacon," French toast, waffles, potatoes, fruit, coffee and orange juice. The sausage and bacon are freshly homemade (no frozen fakin' bacon, here!) every Sunday. Other items might include biscuits and gravy or tofu benediction. The café typically attracts locals, but...
