Cute but not cutesy, value-priced but not cheap, fancy but not fussy, Five is one of those quiet, half-hidden bistros where you wind up on a whim one weeknight, where no reservations (or jackets) are required, where the menu changes daily but you always know you'll find something tasty and fresh, simple yet surprising. Chef Anthony Devoti visits the markets each morning to bring back delights like Yukon Gold potato blini; risotto with lemon, Parmesan and arugula; and a radish, goat cheese and cilantro salad. Meats might be wild-caught Alaskan salmon, soy-and-citrus-marinated pork tenderloin or "duck two styles," a seared breast and a confit leg.
Whether you're Jewish or Christian or a devil-worshipper who just appreciates good food and wine, Five Bistro (5100 Daggett Avenue; 314-773-5553) has you covered. Chef Anthony Devoti is hosting a go... More »

Many a chef will talk your ear off about the virtues of seasonal, local produce. But few, if any, are as committed to the concept as Anthony Devoti. Peruse the menu at Five Bistro and you'll see that almost every dish features at least one ingredient (usually the plate's focal point) from a local grower or rancher. Of course, finding top-quality local produce means nothing if you don't know how to prepare it properly, and Devoti's passion is evident in the plates he and his kitchen staff... More »
When word got out late last year that Newstead Tower Public House would close, it sent a chill down the spines of burger lovers throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area. Newstead had opened only three years prior, but in that short time its burger had leapt to the pinnacle of the local ground-beef-on-a-bun pyramid. (This paper dubbed it "Best Burger" in 2008 and 2010.) No worries: Anthony Devoti relocated the Newstead burger to the menu at his other establishment, Five Bistro, and it... More »
Five is a family affair: Anthony Devoti is the executive chef; his parents, Joe and Bonnie, manage the front of the house. The family vibe extends to guests at Five Bistro, which this summer relocated to the Hill from Forest Park Southeast's Grove neighborhood. Whether you're dining there as a couple or, as someone of our acquaintance recently did, with more than a dozen of your girlfriends, the Devotis will make sure you are comfortable, the better to enjoy the delicious fare prepared by...
