Arguably Houston's answer to NYC dive CBGB's since 1977, Heights staple Fitzgerald's can't help but ooze local music history. The historic two-story venue boasts four bars, a killer Wednesday open mic night, and music most every night of the week on the larger upstairs and the smaller more intimate downstairs stages. The neighborhood surrounding it is growing, so parking is always at a premium on the weekends.

Most of the people who pass Mark "Barney" Greenway in the street every day almost certainly have no idea what the man does for a living. His sensible haircut, unassuming demeanor and soft-spoken Birmi... More »
Imagine my surprise when, last fall, at a late-night gig after Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, I discovered that the falsetto-voiced singer of a new favorite band, Black Moth Super Rainbow, was a male, no... More »
Since Free Press Summer Fest's Omar Afra and Jagi Katial bought Fitzgerald's in July 2010, the old Heights dance hall's transformation has been remarkable. Already one of Houston's most historic venues (Elvis and James Brown played the building), Fitz has upgraded its sound, raised the floor in the big upstairs room and begun attracting the kind of talent that used to laugh out loud at the idea of playing Houston until the packed houses they saw staring back at them shut them up real quick.... There are a lot of things to like about the "new" Fitzgerald's: better sound, better bookings, not feeling like the floor upstairs could give way at any minute. Oddly, though, one of the things we like best is something the Heights club's new owners haven't changed at all. Walk into Fitz's downstairs men's room and it's like Emo's in Austin or the late CBGB in New York -- you know you're in a real rock club, and you can feel every bit of Fitz's three-decade-plus history in the chipped... What makes Pegstar an "innovative" promoter? A few years ago, founder Jagi Katial didn't buy into the conventional wisdom that Houston was a terrible town for indie-rock, and has reaped the benefits ever since. Katial kept making offer after offer to bands whose first instinct may have been to bypass Houston in favor of Dallas, Austin or New Orleans, and enough accepted that now a different kind of word of mouth is going around -- that Houston had some of the most enthusiastic crowds on... After a hot, sweaty night of dancing and slamming to punk rock legends the Queers on the bottom level of Fitzgerald's, a group of tough-looking teenage girls waited in line for the bathroom. As they leaned against the wall, wiping their Manic Panic hair out of their eyes, they couldn't help but check out the three women in their late twenties who were waiting for the bathroom as well. Shouldn't these older chicks be at an after-work happy hour, knocking back martinis and discussing their... More »
It's tough in Houston for new local acts to get gigs. It's a catch-22: While everyone wants to see the next big thing, local audiences can be blasé about going out and seeing new bands. A band has to get a rep before people start coming out to see them, but how can they earn their spurs if nobody will let them get up and play? Fitzgerald's will. Now in its 25th year, the rambling old Polish dance hall has survived conversion from a blues and roots bar into the proving ground for fresh... More »
Go here for punk shows! At least, that's what I do.
nice small venue for concerts. across the street from some entertaining, drunken karaoke as well.
I spent half of my high school years at punk shows here. Mxpx, Mest, blink182, Unwritten Law, RxBandits, Mustard Plug, Reel Big Fish, H20, and ......dashboard confessional. it was a long, long time ago. Great old house with a lot of memories. There used to be a great BBQ place down the street where you could get a baked potato with chopped beef for $4, but I drove past Fitz yesterday and it was gone. Too bad, it soaked up a lot of booze...
