Description

While it bills itself as a neighborhood joint, Fireside Pies is still a chain, albeit a local one. It slings out crusty, pecan-wood-fired oven pizzas, like the fresh mozzarella (market tomatoes, hand-torn basil and balsamic vinegar) and the spicy Italian sausage with scamorza and roasted red onions. The rustic method of making pies is echoed by the cedar and copper design elements. Fireside negotiates a fine line between importing goods from Italy and using local ingredients. Among the latter are the mozzarella and scamorza from Paula Lambert's Mozzarella Company as well as Jimmy's sausage from Jimmy's Italian Food Store in Old East Dallas. Customers here rave about the pizza while supporting hometown business.

Tell you what: Just go to Nick Badovinus' hip and happenin' joint (next to his Cuba Libra) and scan the menu. You'll find just the right pie for you. If you don't (our little one just wanted "plain ol' pepperoni pizza"), they'll make it for you. Fantastic flamed pies and big salads are the attraction here, as is the... More »

  • 2004 | Best Way to Prove You're Secure With Your Masculinity

Every man fears "women's drinks" for one reason: Ordering a fruity neon drink may cause a bit of...well...shrinkage. But if you pack more than enough to spare, there's no reason not to fight through the crowds at Fireside Pies and order up a prickly pear margarita. The color alone--a cross between fuchsia and flaming pink--is enough to cause your masculine regions to shrivel up and your voice to reach the eunuch octave. Just think of it this way: They create the drink from a manly portion... More »

Hard to see what dry-aged prime steak and hand-thrown pizzas have in common, but there must be something. Maybe pizzerias are customizing steak house iceberg lettuce wedges with bone-in pepperoni. No matter. Tristan Simon has poached former Dalla... More »
