This all-volunteer, all-acoustic Westside music café just celebrated its 26th anniversary, and remains Phoenix’s only smoke-free, alcohol-free small performance venue. Widely known for hosting local and national musical acts, Fiddler’s Dream is also renowned for its unusual open-stage policy: Following most Friday and Saturday night shows, any act is offered 10 minutes (or three songs) onstage. A long list of music festivals, live acoustic concerts and national touring acts keeps this place hopping on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, when the friendly staff also serves up coffee, tea, and tasty diner food besides. There’s a real vibe here, too—squint a little, and it’s easy to pretend you’re in a North Beach bistro circa 1968, waiting for Joni Mitchell or Judy Collins or Joan Baez (or one of the other folky chick singers whose names begin with J) to perform.
We stumbled upon this one-of-a-kind coffee shop, on the grounds of the Phoenix Friends Meeting space at the southeast corner of 17th Street and Cactus Wren, on our way to a west-side concert. The $1 brew's pretty solid -- not complicated by a dozen chocolate, caramel, or seasonal-flavor extras -- or you can opt for equally cheap tea, juice, or soda. If coffee shops were people, Fiddler's Dream would be an aging hippie who just wants, like, music, freedom and peace, man. Despite its weekend-only hours and Quaker meeting-hall digs, we love Fidd's because it's a true community in a city of 5 million-plus people. The $1 brew's pretty solid — not complicated by a dozen chocolate, caramel, or seasonal-flavor extras — or you can opt for equally cheap tea, juice, or soda. The nonprofit volunteer organization hosts live acoustic music on Fridays and Saturdays. And by acoustic, we mean kickin' it old school. No speakers. No mics. Just regular folks, chatting about life and love over a cuppa joe while a guitar plays in the background. Exactly what a neighborhood coffee shop should be.
