Description

A pool-hall/jazz-club hybrid is a rare and incongruous thing: While the swinging drummer and bandaged-finger bassist are unfailingly precise, the same can't be said for some of the patrons swarming around the pool and ping-pong tables. But that's what makes the combination such an unexpected blast: There's no expectation that you be as graceful as the musicians here, which makes Fat Cat extra inviting. On Fridays, a $3 cover gets you in the door, and from there you can play pool, ping-pong, shuffleboard, foosball, or, yes, Scrabble and chess. Basically, this is a bachelor-pad carnival, except your bachelor pad doesn't have bartenders, too.

  • 2011 | Best Bar to Play Games

When you really want to play games--real games, the kind you played as a kid or college student--you should head to Fat Cat, the Greenwich Village bar (wine, beer, and cider), cafe ("modest" snacks, juices, soda, coffee, and tea), and, most importantly, giant rec-center-esque game room-cum-music hall with jazz and other acts (three bands a night). As for the games: There's pool and Ping-Pong (10 tables each), shuffleboard, foosball, Scrabble, chess, checkers, and backgammon. If you're... More »

  • 2000 | Best Manhattan Pool Hall

Down in the basement, with its cobalt blue walls, neon, and seedy decor similar to that of a working-man's strip club, is the diamond in the pocket, Fat Cat Billiards. The occasional pool shark withstanding, this gem is actually a quaint and friendly joint populated by as many young women as men, and its eclectic jukebox reflects the racial and cultural mix of the clientele. With 28 tables, two Ping-Pong tables, air hockey, pinball, and 17 different brands of beer, it's not too difficult to... More »

This place was awesome for my friends 19th birthday party. We were all able to get in and have a great time playing pool and listening to some good up-tempo jazz from a group of guys that looked about our age. If you don't think you'd fit in with a bunch of college kids, this place isn't for you.
