A good pool hall is about pool, and it carries a faint aroma of seediness and stale beer, and a pall of cigarette smoke hugs the ceiling. It's frequented by taciturn men (and women, but mostly men) who bring their own sticks in battered leather cases, dour old-timers and regulars who gather at the back tables and rack 'em for hours without saying much. It doesn't sell microbrews and grilled chicken sandwiches; if you're lucky you can order from a gut-busting menu of pizza, dogs, burgers, and nachos. No other pool hall in the metro area matches that description quite like Fat Boy Billiards. The Northeast institution, said to be the oldest pool hall in Minneapolis, fits the bill on all but two of those counts: This being Minneapolis, you won't find any cigarette smoke, and you can't get alcohol at Fat Boy, which is probably just as well. You will find two floors with 18 tables, where you can play for a reasonable fee of $5.50 an hour ($6 on weekends), or $8.50 for two players ($9 weekends). Sharks on a budget can take advantage of the daily special: Shoot all day, 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., for $9.50.
The gigantic, multihued pool balls painted on the outside walls of Fat Boy make it clear what the joint is all about. A hub of leisure since 1923 (first as a bowling alley), the space was rechristened a pool hall in 1989, and it's been a Northeast mainstay ever since. Step through the front door (an 8 ball) and you'll find an earnest, no-frills vibe. The two-level, wood-paneled emporium houses 14 pool tables, with two billiard tables and a couple of snooker tables to boot--which means... More »

Fat Boy Billiards is a no-nonsense pool hall for no-nonsense pool players. The fourteen pool tables, two snooker tables, and two billiard tables are part of what sets this place apart from the others: They're all well-maintained, clean, and flat. The cues are fairly unwarped (you'll have to come up with some other excuse for your bad shots), though of course most of regulars bring their own. And the prices are competitive too: $5.50 per hour for one person, $8.50 per hour for two or more. On... More »
There's nothing fancy about this Northeast pool hall. No booze. No food to speak of. No flashing lights or live DJs. Fat Boy can lay claim to one simple boast: the finest collection of pool tables and cues in town. This is the place to shoot some serious stick with no distractions--and therefore no excuses. The decade-old, 20-table, two-story hall has the feel of a local institution. Beads for tallying wins and losses hang from the ceiling. A cloud of cigarette smoke continually lingers in... More »
If pool is just a pretense for drinking or picking up a date, there are plenty of joints in the metro with decent tables and a liquor license. If you're looking for superior competition or state-of-the-art equipment, there's a handful of spacious joints in the suburbs, including past winners Jimmy's Pro Billiards in Columbia Heights and Billiard Street Cafe in Fridley, where you can hobnob with storied players and test your skills in a variety of leagues, tournaments, or pickup games. These... More »
