This ultra-Italian pizzeria from the owners of nearby Farina Focaccia and Cucina Italiana is designed to feel like a sleek, Italian diner. A long bar faces the pizza oven like a lunch counter, and handsome wooden communal tables take the place of booths behind them. Mod chrome fixtures, subway tile, and a pop-art ceiling collage featuring midcentury Italian comic book characters complete the retro feel at this Mission District restaurant. The Neapolitan pizzas at Farina Pizzeria and Cucina are fired in a custom pizza oven constructed with sand from Mt. Vesuvius and salt from the Mediterranean, and while they are made with high-quality imported ingredients, including fresh cured salty ham and luscious prosciutto, the pies overall are a bit soggy in the center. The rest of the menu offers Italian appetizers like a tasty warm octopus salad, and a pasta puttanesca that came perfectly al dente, with the assertive zest crucial to Neapolitan sauce.
