One of the most original DIY kits we've found is the mushroom Mini-Farm from Far West Fungi. The next best thing to mushroom hunting, and far less dangerous, they come in shiitake (the easiest to grow) and tree oyster. The kits ($19.50 each) are cultivated from the fungi at the store's Moss Landing farm, but don't smell much different from the mushrooms they grow.
