A decade ago there were more than 200 days of horseracing each year at Fairmount Park. These days there are 60. With the deals the track is trotting out, it's hard to fathom why people aren't flocking to play the ponies. Take Fairmount's Horse Hooky Tuesdays, which promise a full afternoon of thoroughbred racing for the cheap admission price of $1.50. Not only is the crowd more colorful on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. (crusty, cigar-chomping old men and Mexican cowboys, mostly) but with $2 bottles of Coors and 75-cent hot dogs, you can get a belly full of beer and hot food for less than a two-horse exacta box. Of course, if you also play that exacta box, you stand a chance of walking out with more than you came in with.
Selecting Riverfront Times' Best of St. Louis 2011 was no picnic. Choosing the winner meant several worthy candidates would go unmentioned -- until now. In this Gut Check series, we are chewing our wa... More »

Tuesday-Horse Hookey.... Friday and Saturday Party Time. Bet the races, eat, drink. Great place to hang with friends!
Great time with a large group. I'd suggest going during the party at the park, although expect really poor food quality and a super packed place. Fun nevertheless
Back in his younger days, Grandpa had a strict rule: You don't get lunch at the racetrack until you win. But ever since the price of a hot dog at Fairmount Park dropped to a buck on Horse Hooky Tuesdays (during the live racing season in spring and summer), the old man's eased up a bit. It requires a full belly for him to properly explain his system for betting, and for you to properly comprehend. Gramps' "system," you see, has nothing to do with odds or history or anything printed in the... More »

Aaaaaaaand they're off! Thursday Night has been training well lately here at Fairmount Park's Black Stallion Room, and with the odds stacked against Dusty Benches, Seven Bucks Entry Fee looks ready to deliver. Dollar Beer is definitely a crowd favorite, but don't discount Hot Wings just yet! Pasta Salad's holding its own, as is Trough of Spaghetti. But suddenly out of nowhere down the backstretch it's Plateful of Beets! Plateful of Beets! No Sneezeguard offers a bit of hesitation, but not... More »
Admission sets you back $1.50. A small beer costs the same. (If you want to bump it up to a sixteen-ouncer, that'll be $2, buddy.) Hot dogs are 75 cents apiece, a Coke goes for two bits less than that and parking is free. Whatever else you might end up donating to the track -- well, that's up to you and the ponies. Horse Hooky Tuesday starts at 11 a.m. (first race post time 1 p.m.) nearly every Tuesday during live-racing season and continues until the last sorry claimer slogs across the... More »
Although it remains a mystery as to why the Lou's closest haven for pony bettors has night racing on Saturdays and Sundays and daytime racing during the week (should be the other way around, friends), one thing's for certain: Sarah Tomer, the brunette who cracks the coldies at the Corona kiosk on the walkway between grandstands, is a bombshell -- and sweet as peach pie to boot. Kitschily resplendent in a form-hugging yellow unitard, away from the shade, our girl would have plenty of reason... More »
It's only appropriate to spend a first date at Fairmount Park, because both are definitely a gamble, with the odds against you. Pick a horse, plunk down some money and then enjoy two minutes of wild excitement while you wonder whether your pony will prevail or peter out. As for the awkward pauses associated with first dates, there's the diversion of the Daily Racing Form. You can eat and drink there, to boot, so as to have a clearer perspective on your chances. Plus, if the date bombs,... More »
We'll take the ponies over pai gow poker any day. The fresh air. The past-her-prime longshot that winks en route to the post, sending you scurrying for the nearest betting window. The wise guys poring over reams of stats sitting next to cute girls in tube tops who giggle at the rube that bets it all on a past-her-prime mare that happened to wink. The bad nachos dripping with cheese sauce, the smell of hamburgers on an open grill. The $1 bottles of Bud and live music every Friday. The... More »
