Description

St. Louis' first and only Nepalese restaurant has moved from the fringes of the loft district to the Forest Park Southeast's up-and-coming Grove neighborhood, but it retains much of its hole-in-the wall charm. More important, the food is still fantastic, from the simple pleasures of mo-mos (steamed pork dumplings from Tibet) to the complex interplays of meat, vegetables and spices that fill daal, bhat, tarkari ra saag (a complete Nepalese meal: rice, meat, vegetables, pickled mango, a lemon wedge and a slice of cucumber). Be sure to read the letter posted at each place-setting describing owner Devi States' remarkable life and commitment to public health.

Watch the expression on his face change as he realizes he just stuffed his piehole with a bounteous feast of happy, delicious food and didn't tear into a single bite of flesh. Everest Café -- not an all-out vegetarian or vegan restaurant, but a place that offers plenty of permutations for the vegetarian or vegan... More »

  • 2004 | Best Vegetarian Restaurant

Here's the thing about vegetarian restaurants: All the better if they're not vegetarian restaurants. Just because you don't ingest animal, that doesn't make you some sort of party-pooping, Debbie Downer stick-in-the-mud who can't have a good time and share a good meal with your carnivorous compadres. (And if you are, we're guessing your digits pop up in few 314-programmed cell phones anyway, in which case go directly to Best Place to Eat Out Alone.) You're just picky, or political, and the...
