Description
A few decades into its run, Esperpento is still packed and jovial, thanks to pitchers of sangria and notably low prices for its Spanish dishes. Also unchanged: the decor, painted in colors Betsey Johnson would approve; the swirl-topped tables; and the photo of Salvador Dali, waxed mustache finally fashionable again. Esperpento's tapas menu is big enough to contain lows (bland creamed spinach, cheap jamon serrano). But, on the whole, the Mission District restaurant remains a great place to fill a table with dishes like fried anchovies, pinchos morunos (pork skewers) the restaurant's famous papas bravas with spicy mayonnaise, and smoky, thinly sliced artichokes cooked on the grill.
