Housed in a corner of the one-time Lowenstein Theatre, Encore Restaurant features a beautiful long bar stretching out below crystal chandeliers; a crowd composed of families, yuppies and culture vultures who've wandered over from Tattered Cover and Twist & Shout; and a talented kitchen turning out a solid, New American menu of both jump-started comfort food and ethnic translations. The french fries are the best in town.
At 10 a.m. on Sunday, when Encore, Paul Reilly's "country club" restaurant on East Colfax, opened its doors for the final time, ninety people were already standing in line to get a seat...and that was... More »
The big news on the Denver dining scene last week was the sudden shuttering of Encore, the restaurant that's been part of the Lowenstein complex -- the restaurant occupies the original lobby of the th... More »
We've had some spectacular dishes at Encore on Colfax since it opened in 2008, and the restaurant recently landed our award for Best Brunch in Best of Denver 2012, thanks to chef-owner Paul Reilly's d... More »
Colorado chefs cook their asses off -- not just in their respective restaurants but at culinary events all over the city, and last night was no exception, as thirty chefs from Denver, Boulder and Colo... More »
No. 49: Telluride jalapeno poppers from EncoreOne of my favorite bars in Denver to drink, eat, people-watch and simply relax is at Encore, whose buzzy, open kitchen struts the culinary smarts and sk... More »
We've never found a better reason to lift our head off the pillow than brunch at Encore. Start the day off right with a plate of ethereal ricotta-filled beignets and a bloody Mary to soothe the debauchery from the night before, then move on to one of the other marvels created by chef Paul Reilly. Our favorite is his magnificent lamb posole, sidekicked with all the necessary accoutrements -- sliced radishes, onions, cilantro and lime wedges -- and capped by creamy scrambled eggs.... More »
Any bar can ice down three ounces of vodka or gin and pour it in an up glass, but a true martini is a classic cocktail, made with care above all. It also contains gin, vermouth and maybe a dash of bitters, stirred and served up with a twist. If you order a martini at Encore, you'll know you're in the hands of a pro immediately: The bartender's first question is "sweet or dry?" No matter your response, the bar makes a spot-on rendition of the drink, a balanced mix of one of a handful of gins... More »
Those people you see hanging out by the door, their feet shifting impatiently, their jaws moving up and down, mimicking the eating motion? Those people have been to Encore before, have already tried the fig 'n' pig flatbread pizza, and can't wait to get at it again. A properly charred oval smeared with a fig spread that's dotted with crumbles of Gorgonzola, sheeted with tarps of salty prosciutto and forested with bright arugula leaves, this is a non-traditional pizza that promptly transports... An encore performance by Encore, which continues to serve the best french fries in the city. They're hand-cut shoestrings, perfectly fried, then given a drizzle of hot mustard sauce that sounds a little scary until the first minute you taste it on the hot frites. After that, you'll be a shameless addict, hooked for the rest of your days and comparing every other french fry in the city to those coming from this kitchen. More »
When Encore opened last December, it came equipped with some cool history, since it occupies part of the old Lowenstein Theater, and great neighbors -- Twist & Shout and the Tattered Cover. Encore also has a classic long bar, an interesting menu and savvy owners (the folks who brought us the Black Pearl). But what Encore really has going for it are its french fries: perfectly cooked, heavily salted shoestrings that are unbelievably addictive -- particularly hit with a drizzle... More »
