Description

CLOSED (This now the location of Ristobar.) This new addition to the Emporio Rulli mini-empire (the original bakery-cafe in Larkspur, a small cafe in downtown San Francisco, two coffee bars at SFO, and a mail-order business) adds terrific Italian dinners to the superb baked goods, panini, and coffee drinks it's known for (and which are perfect for light breakfasts and lunches). The dinner menu changes weekly, but we've been impressed by the quality and originality of the food. The airy, stylish room, with a fancy chandelier suspended from an even fancier mural-painted ceiling, features modernistic chrome tables and chairs; during the day, you can dine at sidewalk tables.

This isn't the platinum brick of cream cheese that traditionally caps off an evening of rib-eye and martinis, but a light and airy Sicilian cassatta, a timbale of barely sweetened ricotta studded with pistachio... • 2004 | Best Cookie

It's a simple thing, really, but a perfect one: a preserved amarena cherry, imported from Italy, wrapped in a ball of house-made marzipan, the resulting sweetmeat rolled in sliced almonds and powdered sugar. Quite a luscious bite (perfumed, heady, but not cloying). This is our clear favorite among the excellent cookies available here (more than two dozen varieties), all priced at $19.95 a pound (which works out, at 40 to 45 cookies per pound, to about 60 cents a cookie. But why stop at one?... More »
