Embarcadero in Rancho Santa Margarita is San Francisco-inspired, but it’s a not-too-heavy-handed Southern California interpretation of NorCal culture and food. There are Golden Gate motifs and a shimmering nighttime mural of the skyline, with the Transamerica Pyramid smack-dab in the middle. There’s cioppino and clam chowder. Peruse the rest of the menu and realize Embarcadero is not unlike every restaurant that serves modern American cuisine from here to Peoria. It offers a reliable list that includes sliders as part of the appetizers, a Caesar as one of the salads, and a pizza on a finger-thick crust that looks and tastes un-Mozza-like. The rest consists of thick burgers, steak-heavy mains, and something rich made of chocolate and ice cream as one of the desserts.
