When suburban moms with an artsy bent (librarians, amateur opera singers) head to the mall, they make a beeline for Eileen Fisher, which has been selling well-madeaif occasionally shapelessabasics to such women for two decades. Though they do try to entice other types of customers (with a petites collection, or some hip, form-hugging sweaters) there is something to be said for being consistent.
