As Wayne Coyne of renowned Oklahoma rock band The Flaming Lips once noted, Eleanor Tinsley Park operates as a “natural amphitheater.” Even in the blistering heat of summer, few things are cooler than listening to a fabulous band while sprawled out on Tinsley’s large grassy hill, as the Houston skyline acts as a stunning backdrop. Formerly known as Buffalo Bayou Park, Tinsley is swarmed by tens of thousands of Houstonians and out-of-towners each year for the annual Free Press Summer Fest and a variety of other festivals, including the city’s annual Fourth of July fireworks show.

Since it seems like all you can see of Houston from the air is sprawl, the ideal view of the city should come at ground level and include something besides our justifiably famous downtown skyline -- like the fact that Houston is a city of trees. Since we're so damn flat, it's hard to beat the banks of Buffalo Bayou off I-45 to get some perspective. Get down close enough to the water and the city around you disappears in a canopy of greenery. Turn around and walk back, and those... More »
As long as you're there before dark, Eleanor Tinsley offers a pleasant tour of Buffalo Bayou with plenty of pleasant scenery and shade. The trail follows the bayou below the theater district, through Buffalo Bayou Art Park, past the new public skatepark and through plenty of tree-filled openings, all with the skyline in the background. The twists and turns allow for a choose-your-own-adventure workout to keep you from seeing the same old thing day after day. But if routine is your style,... More »
Though it looks like we can't decide which one of these places is best, the truth is their connections make them all winners. The trails running through Buffalo Bayou Art Park, Eleanor Tinsley Park and the Sabine-to-Bagby Promenade allow off-the-jobbers from many locations -- including Montrose, Memorial and downtown -- a chance to get their jog on without traveling too far. The trails provide plenty of beautiful views of nature, cityscapes and local art. (And by nature we mean... More »

Great place to ride a bike , walk a dog, or go skatebording. Really good view of downtown and close to Montrose.
