There's a chance to slip in one more comedy show before the end of the week every Sunday at El Willy's Vive! Not only is this your last opportunity to catch a laugh before the start of the work week, it's also one of the metro's quirkiest open mics. Host Corey Adam has a wrestling promoter's flair for gimmicks and special events, including the open-mic cage fights that pit new comics in a tournament against one another to win a paid spot, and Shannon Thompson Bobblehead Night, in which Adam gave away 20 repurposed bobbleheads hand-crafted into the likeness of Thompson, a favorite Twin Cities performer. This September will see the launch of the Funniest Person in Coon Rapids contest, a cheeky twist Adam calls "a comedy anti-contest" in which the losers of previous rounds crown the winner. Anyone who signs up by 9:30 each week is promised a spot to perform at the open mic (the contest weeks excepted), which makes Willy's a good place for newcomers to test their mettle, and each week also features a paid headliner who does a longer set to anchor the show— local pros as well as top-notch out-of-towners passing through like Glenn Wool, Andy Haynes, and Paul Hooper.
