The only thing better than the bean dip - a large bowl of equal parts refried beans and melted Mexican white cheese zinged up with a mild blend of spices ($5.62 with unlimited baskets of tortilla chips) - is this authentic, family-owned restaurant's attitude toward BYOB. Walk in with a six-pack of Corona and the waitstaff promptly places an ice bucket on your table. They'll even provide the limes - which go wonderfully with sizzling fajitas accompanied by grilled steak, onion, and pepper aplenty - or burritos so swollen with goodness they look like they're about to bust at the seams. And although the menu at this nondescript Homestead favorite is flavorful, it's not overly spicy. So if you're a lover of all things hot 'n' spicy, try the chile relleno: a large poblano pepper stuffed with your choice of chicken, beef, or cheese; dipped in egg batter; and smothered with salsa and melted cheese ($9.25).

A first-time visitor to this Mexican joint in the historic district of Homestead may be baffled to see Styrofoam coolers filled with ice and bottles of beer dotting the floor next to most tables. But a quick glance at the menu explains it. El Toro Taco doesn't have a liquor license, so the only way to swig a Corona with your meal is to bring it with you, a secret most of the clientele seems to be in on. The BYOB requirement is no deterrent as the place packs a full house on weekends. As soon... More »
For a real burrito, you gotta go south. In the heart of Homestead is the Mexican center of Miami-Dade County, and it's worth stopping off on your weekend jaunt to the Keys or Biscayne National Park for the delicious concoctions at El Toro. Everything here is made on-site, from the flour tortillas to the pepper sauces. They grind and shred their own beef, and boil their own beans. After choosing a filling of your choice (chicken, or the aforementioned ground or shredded beef) you can order... More »
