The Laurenzo clan of Ninfa's fame delivers the Tex-Mex (and the margaritas) you expect -- and then some. Crabmeat quesadillas are spectacular; fajitas, more than respectable. But food isn't this cantina's main draw; it's the generous, friendly service and an atmosphere designed to make diners relaxed and comfortable.
El Real isn't the only Tex-Mex place with a distinguished pedigree that opened recently. The Laurenzo family, which currently operates Laurenzo's and the El Tiempo Cantinas (but is perhaps best known ... More »
Having visited El Tiempo many times, at a recent Valentine's Day brunch I decided to change up my usual order of eggs and enchiladas with pecan pancakes and try something different. I spotted pork cho... More »
A salad of contrasts: You won't find a jicama and mango salad ($8.39) at many Mexican restaurants. But they serve this refreshing dish at 1308 Cantina El Tiempo (1308 Montrose, 713-807-8996). It contains just three main ingredients — jicama,... More »
The mixed grill (regular, $46.95, or deluxe, $64.95, both for two people) at El Tiempo Cantina (3130 Richmond, 713-807-1600) is made for those who can't make up their minds. It includes nearly everything that the restaurant makes: chicken and... More »
I have always wondered about the cocktail called the Cuba Libre. Which free Cuba are we talking about here? The Fidel-free Cuba of the future? The Batista-free Cuba of Fidel? Drink historians have traced the reference to the Spanish Empire-free... More »
This is my favorite mexican food in Houston! Eating here is an event. It is ALWAYS packed on the weekends - it's great to mingle at the bar before you are seated. The menu is HUGE but if you are looking to go big, or guys- impress your date- get the Gourmet Deluxe Grill Parrilladas! It's everything- chicken, beef, shrimp, lobster - all piled high on a grill on your table!
It's all about the ambience, fajitas and margaritas at this famous Houston Tex-Mex institution. The restaurants are dark and homey, with inviting bars that exude that relaxing cantina feel. Start off with a serving of queso and chorizo and then order up a heaping plate of fajitas, piled high with strips of filet and lobster, with a decadent butter sauce on the side to go along with El Tiempo's famous red and green salsas. Then wash it all down with a potent margarita that'll make any drinker... More »
What sets apart the nachos at El Tiempo are the toppings: You can choose from brisket, chorizo, veggies, carnitas, fajitas, crabmeat and shrimp. The waitstaff is very accommodating, so if you want to mix it up, they're happy to combine ingredients, add stuff or go half and half -- perfect for those who have issues with decision-making. The shrimp-and-crabmeat nachos are excellent, especially after the addition of bacon. But be sure you have plenty of help eating them, or you'll never make it... More »
