Description

Although the Sunday mariachi brunches are the big draw, any day is a good day to sample the Mexican mainstays at El Tejado. The green chile is thick, gravy-like and a true Colorado creation, but everything else on this menu is authentically south of the border, from the big seafood cocktails to the carne asada. The atmosphere is casual, the service fast. Play "La Bamba" again!

Smother love: It's easy being green in Denver in September, when the smell of roasting chiles overrides the odor of exhaust along Federal Boulevard, and the green chile at your favorite Mexican joint ... More »

When I walked up to the bar at El Tejado, I asked the bartender for Patrón on the rocks. "Are you sure?" he asked. "Don Julio is better." Although I've been drinking Patrón for years, I decided to go with Don Julio Anejo ($7.50) and was happy... More »

Personal bests: This town isn't exactly overflowing with places that cook up Southern-style eats--see the review of Hugo's above for one nice option--so it hurts when a good one goes down. And you can say goodbye to So-Fully Kosha Res-runt, which... More »

  • 2008 | Best Mariachi Brunch

El Tejado doesn't just serve some of the town's best, and most varied, Mexican food -- fried snapper that you might find in Puerto Vallarta, street-style tacos and a thick, gravy-like green chile that could only be made in Colorado. During Sunday brunch, it serves that food with a side of mariachi music. The good-humored musicians play all the standards and take requests. Fair warning: When the Broncos are playing in town, the band often takes a break. More »

  • 2003 | Best Mexican With Mariachis

El Tejado serves great, authentic Mexican fare -- camarones cocktails, whole red snapper, carne asada tacos -- as well as such north-of-the-border innovations as a thick, hot, gravy-like green chile. But somehow, everything tastes better at Sunday brunch and on Wednesday nights -- when meals are accompanied by strolling mariachis, who walk between tables and take requests. How about "Strum Enchanted Evening"? More »
