Most people think that Peruvians just rock the ceviche, so it may come as a surprise that they also make a hell of a rotisserie chicken and a mean fried rice. El Tambo is tucked away in a generic shopping mall, pretty much undercover to everyone except those already privy to the secrets of that country's cuisine. On any given day of the week, the restaurant is packed to the gills - both with diners eating in and a line of folks waiting for to-go orders. You might be shocked to find out that it also delivers - but apparently locals can't wait 45 minutes to get their pollo on. If you're eating in or taking out, you'll be able to enjoy the art work on the walls - although it is indigenous, it isn't chintzy at all but rather real works of art. But there is really only one reason to eat at El Tambo, and that is the chicken. You can order it as a quarter-chicken combo ($6.22 to $6.30), which comes with either two sides or one. We recommend arroz chaufa, Peruvian fried rice. Make sure you don't fall out of your chair when you see the amount of fried rice you get with your two pieces of chicken; it's easily more than a quart. Once you've been to El Tambo, you'll wonder where it's been all your life.
