El Ranchito bills itself as a restaurant, but on Friday and Saturday nights it’s an all-out party. The mariachi band plays loudly, bounding from table to table with upbeat tunes, while Oak Cliff locals get into some of the neighborhood’s best Mexican fare. Hear these words: cabrito a la parrilla. The baby goat will conquer any craving for Mexican flavors. Tex-Mex traditionalists can take comfort in enchiladas, tacos and fajitas. Need more? On Wednesday evenings Elvis impersonators turn the party up to 11, competing each week for the adoration of the refried-bean-stuffed crowd. The line you’ll see out front is a testament to what you’ll find inside. El Ranchito is a gem.
Mia's, Rafa's, Desperados, Matt's, El Fenix -- certainly I haven't eaten all the beef fajitas in Dallas, but I've eaten quite a few versions. I've been looking for perfectly cooked skirt steak, and mo... More »

The first time I ate cabrito was at El Ranchito, a glorious palace of Mexican food specializing in Comida Nortena (that is, the regional dishes of northern Mexico) located on Oak Cliff's Jefferson Bou... More »

El Ranchito may not bill itself as a Tex-Mex restaurant, but there's a Tex-Mex section on the menu with tacos, burritos and enchiladas. The fajitas turn heads with a trail of smoke and steam wafting behind the cast-iron plate like an old jalopy with bad valves, and most things are flanked by go-to rice and beans. Semantics aside, this place serves up all the classics you expect when dining at a Tex-Mex restaurant, with lots of other dishes waiting to tempt you out of your comfort zone. Try... More »
Every night we dine at this Oak Cliff institution we're treated to the best atmosphere of any Mexican joint in Dallas, complete with a roster of the city's finest mariachis. The fervent strumming of guitars, voices raised in perfect harmony, the sound of twin trumpets ringing off the tile--it's the next best thing to San Antonio, only you don't have to drive five hours and fight the River Walk crowds. On our last visit we even caught a touring act, an amplified band complete with twin... More »
Mexican food is a lot like sex. It comes in infinite varieties, but there are a few basic elements that you just can't do without. And of course, even bad Mexican food is usually pretty good. One way the two differ would be that sex delivers ample visual and aural stimulation, senses that a plate of enchiladas would seem to neglect. Perhaps with that in mind, El Ranchito picks up the enchilada's slack. The riotously kitschy décor and the strolling mariachis provide a suitably lively... More »
