Description

El Metate, a colorful Bernal Heights hangout, whose tiny entryway leads into a comfortable dining room decorated with faux-finish walls and paintings, prepares California-Mexican soul food. Order enchiladas smothered in red sauce; a taco piled with radishes, cilantro, and crisp carnitas; or tightly rolled burritos packed with tender, citrusy pork verde or chile colorado.

The secret to the delicious experience that is an El Metate fish taco lies in the crispy, spiced breadcrumb crust, which provides a great flavor and texture to complement the sweet white fish inside. The pure pleasure of this taco also lies in its simplicity — El Metate has an array of bottled hot sauces you can add, but it's really just the nicely breaded fish on a bed of iceberg lettuce. Yes, iceberg! But the contrast in texture makes it taste fresh, light, and scrumptious. And if you're not running off to your next event in San Francisco, you can enjoy your taco or a full menu of equally tasty taqueria delights in the festive, brightly painted dining room next door, overlooking Bryant. The restaurant likes to call it quits at the early hour of 9 p.m., and at $2.50 a pop, the fish tacos aren't the cheapest Mexican food item to be had in the city, but two of these puppies in the early evening, along with the complimentary chips and salsa, are enough to set up you up right for your night.

  • 2004 | Best Really Cheap Taco

The term "cheap" is so insufficient to the task of pricing El Metate's delicious tacos, we're forced to elaborate. They're really cheap. For a mere buck and a quarter you get two corn tortillas piled high with radishes, onions, lime, cilantro, and one of a dozen substantial fillings, including crisp, spicy pork carnitas; grilled vegetables in season; chile colorado with steak and potatoes; and moist shards of chicken with chile rojo. A variety of salsas -- verde, negra, habanera, et al. --... More »

  • 2003 | Best Quesadilla

It may be tough figuring out who holds the title of best taqueria, but choosing the best quesadilla-maker is easy. Nestled in what was supposed to be the modish Bryant Street stretch (Blowfish, the Monkey Club, et al.), El Metate's small, unimposing site belies its tantalizing menu. The place opened late last year, offering an amazingly simple, tasty quesadilla: With three cheeses and a choice of meat, placed between tortillas and then grilled and quartered, it lacks the oiliness and...
