When owner Grant Gingerich decided to turn the former Swimclub32 into something that would better fit the rapidly changing Highlands neighborhood, he drew inspiration from the taquerias that had been sprinkled throughout the area for years -- but gave the concept a shot of sex appeal. He painted the building bright pink, opened the windows to the outside, and filled the bar with skulls, chandeliers made of beer cans and other flashy Mexican accoutrements. The atmosphere at El Camino is fun and welcoming, and so is the food. While the board is too heavy on things like molten cheese and too light on things like intestines to really sate a craving for authentic Mexican, it's also not hip like the menu at one of Rick Bayless's upscale Chicago joints. Instead, the food here is unpretentious, pulling from all regions of Mexico -- simple fare influenced by the desires of American palates that pairs well with El Camino's killer margaritas. They're the best in town, as are the nachos. And the dollar tacos on Tuesday are a terrific deal.

In its most basic, blissful form, the margarita is nothing more than tequila, triple sec and lime juice -- no orange juice, no sugar, and for God's sake, no mix. And while it's possible to achieve good results by gussying up that original recipe -- using a premium añejo spirit and Grand Marnier, for example -- our utmost respect goes out to those bars that follow the basic recipe and craft a kick-ass house beverage, sold at a house price. Enter El Camino. This spot has... More »
El Camino is known for several things, including stiff drinks and the joint's near-bottomless bowls of queso -- but the appropriately named grande nachos should be at the top of the heap. Whether you have the guts to down the entire platter on your own is debatable, but three amigos, maybe two, should have no problem plowing through the pile of chips, slightly toasted on the edges, draped with curtains of cheese, and elevated to near-ceiling heights with properly seasoned refritos,... Swimclub 32 owners Chris Golub and Grant Gingerich ought to know a little bit about the grape-juice game. Before opening their hipper-than-hip, Asian-inspired, fusion-bistro-slash-tapas bar in the Highland neighborhood, they were both laboring in the cellars of one of the world's best-known wineries, Veuve Clicquot. The knowledge that they gained there certainly didn't go to waste, because now it's all for sale -- by the glass and by the bottle -- on Swimclub's short, sweet and intriguing... More »
Plunge into sake at Swimclub 32, which offers a straight-artisan, almost uncomfortably funky board of both old classics and newcomers. In some case the prices may seem high, but bear in mind that the house is doing a six-ounce wine pour on these bad boys. We don't know of another place in town where you can sip a clean, pure, ultra-premium free-run Ginga Shizuku, chase it with a crisp hit of cheap Bishonen, then do a final round of super-artisan Ama no To "Heaven's Door." Closed . Now Mexican bar "El Camino" Which I'd recommend.
Best Cantina this side of the Border Ya'l! I absolutely adore E Camino! This place has evolved so much over time after transforming from Swim Club (wine bar) to what is now a super chill and inviting Mexican Restaurant and cantina with ocal artists displayed on every wall. Their food is awesome and reasonably priced, great drinks and my favorite staff. I am aways greeted with a smile and a delicious marg. Sheree, Crystal, Shannon....doesn't matter they're all wonderful at what they do. A must-have Denver Spot.
Love the brunch - be sure to add the awesome choizo to your huevos. And, you gotta try the enchiladas with mushroom jalapeno sauce.
