This humble cafeteria-style counter on one side of an indoor market has quickly become the least well-kept secret in the Twin Towns, because one taste of one of this joint's potent guisados is all it takes to get hooked. Guisados are the stewlike dishes the cafeteria offers as fillings for burritos and tacos, or alongside their soft, homemade gorditas; on most days there are about a dozen, freshly made. Favorites include the beef in colorado sauce, a smoky, silky red mole; a pork guisado based on tart bright green tomatillos; or a pollo a la diabla--satanically hot! Salsas are fresh daily, too, and a deli-style counter offers many of the guisados and salsas by the pint or quart, perfect for spicing up those north-country weekends.
American love Mexican food, and that affair has only deepened as more and more authentic restaurants opened to showcase the real flavors of our southern neighbor. The Twin Cities are no different, esp... More »

There's nothing like being able to pick up some sweet Mexican breads, to-go tamales, stalks of sugar cane about as tall as you are, or a piñata or two on your way out the door after dinner. For Mexican-centric one-stop shopping, El Burrito Mercado's got you covered. First order of business is the eats, though. Burrito Mercado has a sprawling menu of items in its cafeteria-style "Café Express"--including a section for masa-only entrées--that translates into a... More »
The first sign that El Burrito Mercado on St. Paul's west side is going to deliver a worthy burrito is the fact that you can smell it before you see it. From the bright yellow market/gift shop/restaurant waft the dueling scents of refried beans and spicy rice, which bodes well for the first bite of their monstrous burritos. Served cafeteria-style, the mercado's burritos are filled with one of a dozen different guisados (a traditional meat stew of chicken, pork, or beef) and can be stuffed... More »
It's all about the beans. Sure, there are other reasons Burrito Mercado has been the place to get your burrito fix for the past 25 years. There are plenty of reasons to come to this Latin retail giant: the too-sweet Fanta, the Goya coffee and fresh tamarillos, the Mexican-made tchotchkes. (We're not going to get into the tamales or the Mexican corn on the cob in the tent out back.) But there is no better burrito in the 612/651 area codes than the one you'll get at Mercado. Stuffed with... More »
So far, 2005 is shaping up to be the year we conquer the chile: dark and musky guajillos, sweet and fruity anchos, startling cascabels, bold, almost tannic pasillas. It's pretty easy to turn the dried pods of your choice into a rich, thick sauce. Toast, soak, grind, and fry, and then simmer along with your choice of meat or fowl. Inspiration is no further away than the prodigious chile section at El Burrito. They sell so many chiles, they pack their own! There's also a full complement of... More »
A man whose opinion we highly respect once likened the idea of stuffing rice into a burrito to serving spaghetti with a side of mashed potatoes--a definite starch overload. The folks at El Burrito Mercado tend to agree, noting a subtle but nonetheless significant difference between a side order of rice and a burrito filled with the stuff. It's advice like that that has kept this authentic Mexican cafeteria/grocery store--situated in St. Paul's District del Sol--tops in our book for what... More »
When it comes to quality Latino grocers in the Twin Cities, no one covers the bases quite as well as El Burrito Mercado. The produce section has quantity as well as quality, with large mounds of ripe avocados, plentiful bunches of plantains, and a sea of multi-colored chili peppers. The deli has fresh chorizo, as well as a plethora of other specialty meats. The bakery is brimming with pastries and cookies (sweet and buttery, they come in a variety of bright colors and knotted shapes, and... More »
This St. Paul institution might be a little too far off the beaten path for power lunchers. But, hey, the category isn't "most utilitarian takeout." And besides, with an inexpensive, tasty, and ever-changing selection of treats, El Burrito's homey cafeteria is worth a little extra effort. The burritos, gorditas, and tamales are perennial favorites, and a meal with rice, beans, and fresh homemade tortillas will set you back only about five bucks. For early risers, huevos con chorizo and the... More »
Shreds of chicken drenched in fiery chiles; beef, roasted and then stewed, as rich as barbecue; chunks of pork in sweet red roasted-poblano chile sauce; sizzled strips of steak with roasted tomatoes; chunks of pork in zingy tomatillo sauce with potatoes... Confronting the ever-changing steam trays in the cafeteria line at El Burrito Mercado can make you swoon with possibilities--and there're always at least six hot and potent options. Announce your burrito intentions, and the workers behind... More »
