Description

Fueled in part by local nonprofit La Cocina, owner Isabel Caudillo's stand at the weekly Noe Valley Farmers' Market is now permanent, and neighborhood residents have to be very happy. Caudillo cooks wonderful Mexico City-style fare - enchiladas, sopes, and chilaquiles - but her signature offerings are guisados, rich, long-cooked stews of meat and vegetables traditionally served with rice and beans. Whether you opt for a massive breakfast or simply a tamale to tame hunger pangs as you shop for produce, be sure to get a cup of Caudillo's excellent horchata.

By Jonathan Kauffman and John BirdsallSince the summer of 2009, when a profusion of food carts sprouted up around the city, smartphone-enabled San Franciscans have become nomadic eaters. Give them a few hours' notice via Twitter, and they'll bike far afield of their normal foraging sites, lining up for half-hours at a time at their favorite street-food source until they've exhausted the cook's supplies. Then they migrate to the next site, leaving trash cans swollen with crumpled napkins... More »
