As you might expect from the man who brought St. Louis Blueberry Hill and the Pin-Up Bowl, the restaurant inside the Moonrise Hotel features plenty of retro kitsch: paintings of ray guns and rockets, moon- and space-related tchotchkes behind glass. The menu veers toward contemporary bistro cuisine, including steak frites, roasted chicken and trout grilled on a plank. Appetizers include a topnotch (and spicy!) calamari starter in jalapeño-garlic butter and a lobster beignet (basically, lobster in a doughnut). Breakfast and lunch are served daily. The cocktail menu is excellent. For a change, try the Blood & Sand, a Scotch-based creation infused with citrus and herbs.

The food was nice, and priced at the level I expected. My problem is with the liquor prices. My 21 year old son wanted to experience a very nice bourbon, so we ordered the Parkers' 27 year old bourbon, straight. I have to say, it was a very nice bourbon. My shock came at the bill; $36.00 for one shot. On the Loop? A $36.00 drink? I know I did not inquire about the price first, but I was expecting "high priced," not "outrageous!" Research shows the bottle to retail at $199.00, so who knows what Mr. Edwards cost is. Anyway, I hope he uses his 900% markup well, since I will never be back, and will never patronize any of his establishments again, and I will also try to convince friends and family of the same. Can you say PRICE GOUGING????
There are few things more mesmerizing than a cocktail. Particularly after you've already consumed several. The weight of the glass in your hand, the strange colors that come from mixing hard liquor and fruit juice. Just give it a shake. Watch the way the liquids swirl together. Listen to the musical click of the ice cubes. It's almost hypnotic. But there are few ice cubes as mesmerizing as the one that comes in the "San Francisco Summer" (and the "San Francisco Summer" only), a concoction of... More »
