Blending Houston's disparate ethnic cuisines — Vietnamese into Jewish, in the case of Eatsie Boys's matzoh ball pho — into one dish has been one of the best dining trends to come along in recent years and is most often sighted at higher-end places such as Underbelly. But now you can find that same technique in a casual cafe setting since the Eatsie Boys have taken over and remodeled the old Kraftsmen Bakery space into a Montrose-area home of their own. Look for other twists like fried shrimp banh mi and Chinese bao called "pork snuggies," but save room for dessert: The Eatsie Boys sell their famous Shipley's Donut ice cream alongside pastries from a slew of local bakeries. The cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day except Sunday, when it's brunch all day long.
There may be nothing better than a fried egg sandwich. Being a southerner, a fried egg sandwich is ingrained in the culture as comfort food. I have to say Eatsie Boy's twist on this classic (called the Eggman) is done extremely well. My selection came topped with cheese and chicken sausage (very well seasoned - almost brat like). Although, my next Eggman will be "the business" - all of the above plus bacon. I will say that I am not sure that the cheese was required - the sandwich seemed salty enough, so I will probably go sans cheese next time.
The Pork Snuggies are also a must have. Soft Asian bun breading (I have had served with Peking Duck) accompanied by pork belly, pickles, veggies and topped with hoisin sauce - a thing of beauty. My pork belly seemed slightly well done for my taste, but overall a very tasty item.
I also want to give a "shout out" to Matt - the guy on the grill. He actually brought the food over to us at Agora personally. I really appreciate that type of service.
