The folks at Beauty Bar have a great sense of whats trendily fun in an old-fashioned sort of way and Noah Ray McMahan of the local branch thinks the time is right in Denver for a theme night on wheels thats already taken Beauty Bar markets like New York City, Las Vegas and L.A. by storm. To that end, the Down & Derby Roller Disco night (as seen on The Girls Next Door!) will debut tonight at the spacious EXDO Events Center, where the wannabe derby stars of Denver can don their hot pants, tube socks and headbands, cozy up to a bevy of helpful Rocky Mountain Rollergirls (whom McMahan calls his mood directors), and hit the floor skating to Gen-X-friendly tunes spun by Beauty Bars Disco Mike. Swoon. The smell of fun is overpowering!
Its kind of like a fourth-grade birthday party, only with booze and skating, McMahan teases, adding that the event will be augmented by surprise reverse skate segments, limbo competitions and other games designed to pull people together on the rink. What else? Denver derby outfitter Derbyville will host a pop-up shop, and expect to find food trucks out on the curb when you get hungry. Even if you dont like roller skating, McMahan adds, you probably like short shorts.
Rock and roll from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. tonight and every third Friday of the month at EXDO, 1399 35th Street in RiNo; admission is $5 to $10 if you RSVP online or $10 to $15 at the door. Bring your own skates if you have them, but if not, $5 will get you one of 600 pairs available for rental. For details or to RSVP in advance, go to www.downandderby.org.
