Description

Dallas' most hilariously-awesome theme bar is, without a doubt, Double Wide. True to its name, the interior of the bar is set up like the inside of a very seedy double-wide trailer. Bad paintings of nude women from the 70s and weird stuffed creatures line the wood panel walls. The patio floor is made of green Astro-turf, the patio chairs are toilets, and the small concert venue showcases some of the best local and national rock bands.

    Celebrate Art-Loving Misfits

That massive celebration of grassroots art lovin’, Art Con 8, left us gleeful for weeks. So why they’re throwing all of us a thank you party is beyond me. Shouldn’t we be baking those organizers a giant cake? (Let’s not overthink it.) It’s a big... More »

Preview: Blackstone Rangers and Diamond Age at Double Wide

Think the lineup for this all-local show sounds like a sci-fi novel? You're not the only one. Headliners Blackstone Rangers are working their way to a new full-length, and the four-piece brings with them some rarefied distorto-pop, and possibly... More »

  • 2012 | Best Place to Meet a Hipster Girlfriend

If you like your women scantily clad, covered in tattoos and sporting the trendiest hair styles, you might want to hang out at the Double Wide. The bar, located on the cusp of Expo Park and Deep Ellum, has something going on nearly every night of the week, from live performances and karaoke to cheap drink specials (like Sunday's $3 you-call-its), and is normally packed with whiskey-slinging, tight-pants-wearing hipster types. So how do you knock the socks off your hipster dream lover? Start... More »

  • 2011 | Best Alcohol-Flavored Salute To Childhood

Yoo-hoo with a stiff slug of vanilla vodka and some coffee liqueur in it sounds like a recipe for disaster, and it is, in the best way. Frozen to the slushy, satisfying consistency of a milkshake and deliciously chocolaty, it's easy to drink one (or five) of these things without noticing how deceptively strong they are. Better still, a Yoohoo Yeehaw lets you relive the best part of your lunch box while still enjoying one of the only perks of being a grown-up. More »

  • 2011 | Best Burgeoning Booze Chain

For almost eight years now, The Double Wide has charmed drinkers and music fans alike down on the edge of Deep Ellum with its unique blend of trailer park décor and rock 'n' roll chic. The cheap drinks haven't exactly hurt the place when it comes to drawing a crowd, either. And now Lower Greenville residents don't have to make the drive down to Deep Ellum to partake in the party. Back in May, when the Winedale Tavern shuttered just months before its 26th anniversary, Double Wide owner... More »

  • 2010 | Best Rock Bar

To call the Double Wide a "rock bar" is a bit of a slight. It's much more than a bar. Sure, it has a bar, but right across the patio from that home base, the establishment also boasts a bona fide concert room with a capacity of 75 (and there's another bar in there, by the way), and it's one of the best rooms in town to catch a show. Really, though, the Double Wide transcends both the "bar" and "venue" tags; for much of the Dallas music community, the Double Wide also serves as a home of... More »

  • 2009 | Best Rock Bar

Sure, there's the live music room across the patio. That helps. But the Double Wide wins points because you don't have to hit the music room--or pay that room's separate cover charge--to enjoy a night of fine music and good friends. Regularly playing host to a couple of the region's finest niche DJs--DJ Slim, whose soul music selection is authentic enough to transport you to another era, and DJ Burlap, whose country tunes offer up a perfect soundtrack to the bar's white trash... • 2009 | Best Pool Party

Yeah, it's cool the Double Wide has had an electric bull in its parking lot. We owned that animal, by the way. But this year, when the Fourth of July came around with triple-digit torture, the ol' D-Dub provided some low-budget relief. Those watching the Fair Park Fourth fireworks from the DW's parking lot (while downing a dollar dog from the grill) were rewarded. In addition to water rifles and lawn chairs, owner Kim Finch had pulled out all the stops and bought several sizes of kiddie... More »

  • 2008 | Best CD Release Party

The party celebrating The Southern Unknown was one for the books. Too many bands are content to stack a show with their friends' bands and just call it a "CD Release Party." Dove Hunter and the Double Wide actually held up the "party" end of the bargain, hauling out a snowcone machine and bringing in an all-female mariachi band from Fort Worth to open the festivities. Honestly, we had so much fun before Dove Hunter played that the band's actual set is something of a blur--but we... More »

  • 2004 | Best Rock Club

It could be the Pabst Blue Ribbon. It could be the Astroturf patio. It could be that awwwesome velvet painting of the topless she-demon-thingy. Whatever it is, Double Wide feels like home--that is, if your mama was Anna Nicole Smith and your daddy was, well, who the hell knows? What makes Double Wide the best rock venue in town, however, is not in dispute: clean sound, nice-size stage, solid local booking, affordable cover and two different bars to separate the drankers from the rawkers.... • 2003 | Best Place to Get a Blue Ribbon

When a friend told us his band was playing at a new place called the Double Wide (yes, as in trailer) and he began to describe it, his voice trailed off and our imagination took over. We pictured him sitting behind his drum kit, dodging beer bottles as the trailer-park regulars battled over their trucks, their old ladies and who's gonna buy the next round of Pabst Blue Ribbon. We were shaken back to reality when we heard our friend say, "So, are you comin'?" To which we promptly replied,... More »

  • 2003 | Best Rock Bar

If the XPO Lounge and the (late, great) Orbit Room had a drunken one-night stand followed by a shotgun wedding, Double Wide would be the result. Or where the reception would be held, at any rate. Open since June, the bar is already a low-culture landmark, thanks to its white-trash environs and white-gold lineup of bands, a comfort-food combination that goes down as smooth as the cheap beer they serve here. (In cans, no less, a fact that is strangely fascinating to many of its visitors, less... More »

Honestly, we had so much fun before Dove Hunter played that the band's actual set is something of a blur—but we certainly remember the party. Here's hoping the band gets to work fast on album No. 2 just so we can go to the bash.

A punk, rockabilly, local music haven on one side, with a kitschy redneck couture bar on the other side.
