Sublimely located next to an ornate Hindu temple, this small café doubled its size for additional comfort, still limiting itself to a handful of South Indian luncheon specialties. Not made from a mix, the masala dosas, uttapams, iddly, and fresh coconut chutney are perfect in every detail. And not a speck of flesh in this strictly vegetarian place. Make the pilgrimage.
The kanchipuram idly at Sapthagiri is served with tamarind sauce and homemade coconut chutney. In case you haven't noticed, vegetable matter is the new meat -- easy to cook and digest, jam-packed wit... More »
TOTONNO PIZZERIA NAPOLITANO 1524 Neptune Avenue, Brooklyn, 718-372-8606. This Coney Islander is the best pizza parlor in town, perhaps in the world, a place whose uncompromising crust is matched only by the excellence of its... More »

Accompanied by the homemade coconut chutney and the vegetable-laden soup called sambar, of course. More »

That's why I go ballistic when places like Hampton Chutney Company feel compelled to fill this vegetarian delight with meat. It's worth seeking out DOSA HUT, located right next to a beautiful Hindu temple, to taste New York's best. Hint: Pick the butter masala dosa, dripping with ghee. More »
Hunkered next to Flushing's magnificent Hindu temple, Dosa Hutt is open only sporadically, but the dosa--a savory potato crepe with a wrapper of ground rice and lentils leavened by natural fermentation--is by far the best in town, and it's worth the wait even if you have to camp out overnight. Among a half dozen choices, tops is the "butter masala dosa," dripping with ghee. Among the handful of non-dosa alternatives, pick iddly--steamed dumplings served with a cup of homemade... More »
