Don's Club Tavern, one of Denver's longest-surviving dive bars, got a bit of a facelift after the bar's namesake died and the folks behind the Little Pub Company took it over in 2005. And while most of the decor and a lot of the old charm are still intact -- as are some of the serious-about-their-drinking regulars -- it also got a few improvements, such as a big garage door facing Sixth Avenue that opens for warm weather; more booths and tables with stools; a back-patio-length green paint job, aluminum roof and industrial heater; high-def flat-screen televisions; Golden Tee and Silver Strike video games; and touch-screen point-of-sale registers.
The 2013 Best of Denver is now on stands (and online), and in its 196 pages you'll find Westword's picks for the best restaurants, bars and chefs around town. Along the way, we asked you to nominate a... More »
It's the brew-soaked dream of any drinking-age guy -- or gal -- to own a great bar. And to own close to twenty of them? That's a drinking dream come true. Since he foundedThe Little Pub Company in 199... More »

Progress is not always a good thing. I liked it better when draft beer only came from a keg, not a bottle or can. I remember when telephones were heavy, two-piece objects that could inflict severe closed-head injuries, not miniature electronic... More »
It's a club with no membership rules, no initiation fees, and dues that vary depending on how much liquor you can consume in one sitting. For more than five decades, Don's Club Tavern has been one of the most inclusive joints in Denver, a home... More »
No matter what decisions you make on your night out, Don's Club Tavern has got you covered in the best of times and the worst of times. And we're not just talking about the friendly dive's good-time vibe and generous hard-alcohol selection: Immediately to the left of the bar is a particularly well-stocked vending machine, where drinkers and pool-players can find Spam and cans of tuna, along with Hot Pockets, Cracker Jack, frozen pizza to pop into the bar's microwave, and even a pregnancy... Don's Club Tavern may be Denver's longest-surviving dive, as well as its most liquid asset. For decades, Don's has been the no-frills saloon of choice for those with a streak of Charles Bukowski in them, who are serious about their drinking. And there's no better way for a place that's been around forever to remind us of how much we love it than to start a closing scare. In late 2004, rumors abounded that Don's -- whose founder died earlier in the year -- was about to sell out, probably to... More »
Our mother always told us to respect our elders. So we're giving mad props to the 57-year-old Don's Club Tavern, a smoky dive bar that welcomes everyone with open arms -- from the regulars who plant themselves daily on Don's bar stools to the college kids in search of a decent pool table and cheap drinks. With faded family pictures and posters of Ireland adorning the dark, wood-paneled walls, and the original cash register still ringing up drinks, you'd have to search high and low to find... More »
In the era of digital boxes networked into 100,000-song libraries, mood is half the battle, and sadly, some places just don't have that good jukebox vibe. But the beer-soaked, retro aura at Don's is a perfect match for the music in its box, with discs ranging from the Beatles' "Abbey Road" to Tom Waits's "Closing Time" to "The Essential Patsy Cline." The nicotine-stained ambience is further bolstered by nice helpings of barroom standards (Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, John Lee Hooker)... More »
Patio outside back, pool tables, cheap drinks. Don's has it all!
I mentioned I looooove love love diver bars....well I love me a cold PBR at Don's. This is the ultimate Dive Bar in D-town. Don's can be very quiet and "relaxing" allowing you to go to your happy place, or it can be an absolute party that will take you to your happy place whether you like it or not. Bartenders were super nice and didn't make us wait. Great crowd and setting, do it.
i love this place. Hey george you better get home and feed the cats
