Description

This old-school chophouse boasts great grub, superior service, and one of the best collections of baseball memorabilia next to Cooperstown, and no, we ain't talkin' about Alice Cooper'stown, bucko. Where else can you see a wall of glassed-in baseballs signed by such legends of the game as Joe DiMaggio, Reggie Jackson, and even Babe Ruth? The food scores a home run, too, with pastas, steaks, prime rib, barbecue, and so on. The "Frogs' Legs Bob Uecker" is not to be missed as an appetizer. Neither is the crème brûlée or the cheesecake for dessert.

  • 2009 | Best Ribs

We're in carnivore heaven every time we do dinner at Don & Charlie's, an old-school steakhouse where the smell of sizzling meat makes us feel like we're floating on a cloud from the front door all the way to the table. What also makes us smile are Don & Charlie's tasty chopped liver plate (always compliments of the house, with warm bread!) and a museum's worth of cool baseball memorabilia decorating every inch of wall space. Steaks are the house specialty, but the ribs are just as... More »

  • 2008 | Best Place to Spot Spring Training Players Off the Field

Hoping to see some spring training major-leaguers off the field Best odds are to hunker down between the Giants' stadium in Old Town Scottsdale and the Oakland A's' stadium near Papago. With only four miles between the two stadiums, the concentrated area of high-end restaurants and shopping in this quadrant is prime hunting area. Fans in this zone are nearly bound to run into a major-league hitter, his wife, or even his manager.Among the hottest stakeouts is Don & Charlie's... More »

  • 2001 | Best Prime Rib

The menu at Don and Charlie's warns that its prime rib is served daily until it runs out. So we get there early. We've never been denied, no matter the time -- that's how well this kitchen knows its clientele -- but why risk missing the juiciest, most flavorful cut of rib in townThe best cuts of meat are aged on premises, then slow-roasted to our order -- rare to medium-rare to showcase the quality of the beef. We've got our choice of sizes and savories, too. Usually the "small" 12-ounce... More »

  • 2000 | Best Domestic Liver

Let others worry about cholesterol and such: We want rich, satisfying foods. We want to line our gullets with the good stuff. The higher the fat, the better. That makes Don & Charlie's pâté a winner in our world. The fact that it's served free as a prelude to a gut-busting steak dinner including salad, potatoes and all the bread we can handle doesn't hurt, either. The appetizer is pure beef liver, smooth but studded here and there with little liver chunks for interesting texture. I... More »

With only four miles between the two stadiums, the concentrated area of high-end restaurants and shopping in this quadrant is prime hunting area. Fans in this zone are nearly bound to run into a major-league hitter, his wife, or even his manager. Among the hottest stakeouts is Don & Charlie's Steakhouse. It's old news that Cubs manger Dusty Baker and ESPN voice Rick Sutcliffe are practically fixtures at Don & Charlie's, which sits just minutes from the Giants' stadium in Scottsdale. Other likely places to spot a major-leaguer include the P.F. Chang's across from Scottsdale Fashion Square and in Fashion Square itself. Those seeking autographs can drive over to the Oakland A's' Papago Park complex, where fans can position themselves to rub shoulders with MLB players walking from the clubhouse to the field.

If you're into baseball and Chicago style steakhouses, you will love this place. It was founded by a couple of diehard Cubs fans who traveled to Arizona for spring training. Apparently, they weren't all that impressed with the restaurant options during their visits. The restaurant is right in the heart of Old Scottdale just east of Scottsdale Road off of Camelback. Call ahead to make sure you can get in... especially during Spring Training season. The bar is pretty cool too, so I always like to show up a bit early to grab a quick cocktail while waiting for the table.
