  • 2011 | Five Best Picnic Spots

By Matthew StaffordBetween the temperate climate, impressive acreage of urban parkland, and global reputation for good eating, San Francisco may be the best city in the country for hamper-packing, blanket-spreading, and al fresco chicken-chomping. Here are some of our favorite places to enjoy a festive meal in the great urban outdoors.Dolores ParkBounded by Church, Dolores, 18th, and 20th streetsWith its grassy, hilly setting; often toasty microclimate; and lovely views of the bay, the... • 2009 | Best Cheap Date

Volunteer-run, donation-funded, and totally free, Dolores Park Movie Night, while fully permitted, has the raucous feel of a guerrilla screening. The series runs April through October on the second Thursday of the month. Organizers show an awesome array of shlock and high-brow, from Jaws 3D to Delicatessen. If your date isn't the kind of person who's enchanted by a Wayne's World sing-along, well, you probably shouldn't be dating him or her anyway. Settle the object of your affection on a... More »

  • 2008 | Best Medicinal Chocolate

Aftermath of a fever dream: You're lounging on the grass in Dolores Park on a perfect weekend afternoon, watching dogs, babies, dogs with Frisbees, babies with Frisbees. A handsome young man materializes out of the mist, bearing a tray hung from a strap around his neck, something like a New Age cigarette girl, but instead of cigarettes the tray holds homemade chocolate truffles costing $5 each. The price sounds a trifle steep, but these are not just any chocolate truffles: blended with the... More »

  • 2006 | Best Outdoor Cinema

As a kid growing up in the Midwest, Sean Boyle would go to summer movie screenings with his sisters, with films projected onto the outside of the local middle school wall. Last year, he and some friends decided to create their own free walk-in movie theater in Dolores Park. They learned how to set up a large movie screen by reading Home Theater for Dummies, and put one up (with speakers) on the south side of the park. Dolores Park Movie Night attracted a few hundred San Franciscans once a... More »

  • 2005 | Best People-Watching Spot

Ever noticed how Dolores Park seems to be, hands down, the warmest spot in the city Aside from the weather, it's an idyllic place -- equipped with six tennis courts, two soccer fields, a stellar downtown backdrop, and a playground that even adults can enjoy. It has also been the neighborhood mecca for cultural and political activities since the 1960s, hosting anti-war rallies, Aztec ceremonial dances, and San Francisco Mime Troupe performances year-round. But the delicious dichotomies of... More »

  • 2003 | Best Place to See a Cross Section of San Franciscans

Not sure where to bring your friends and family to show off the famed loopiness of the city New to San Francisco and want a quick rundown of who lives here A sunny afternoon at Dolores Park can help. The multitiered park is rich with the strata of almost every local stereotype and subdivision you could imagine: among them baton twirlers, drum circle participants, evangelists, purebred dogs with their purebred owners, and loners. The park's top tier (near 20th and Church streets), nicknamed... More »

  • 2002 | Best Park Bench

Taking full advantage of living in a vista-crammed town like San Francisco involves soaking in the scenery every now and then. There's no better place to do that than on the divinely placed bench at the corner of 20th and Church streets. Perched above Dolores Park, it offers sweeping views of all of downtown, the Bay Bridge, and South of Market, plus superb people-, dog-, and dealer-watching. What's more, the bench is located just feet from a J Church Muni stop, so it has public transit... More »

  • 2001 | Best Urban Beach

Warm, sunny days are so rare in San Francisco that at the slightest hint of elevated temperatures a swarm of sunbathers -- mostly male, mostly hunky -- descends on the upper slopes of Dolores Park. As the smell of coconut oil wafts through the air, chiseled gay men in teeny, tiny bikinis rotate on their colorful towels like chickens on a spit. Dogs roam freely, searching from group to group for treats. Ice cream vendors push white carts labeled "helados La Michoacana" (when was the last time... More »

  • 2001 | Best Pickup Game Drug Scene

Anyone who's stood back and watched what passes for basketball on the tennis court surface of Dolores Park's hoops cage has probably asked himself what those guys are smoking. What with the endlessly incoherent, befuddled pace, the bizarre improvisations, and the masses of players who sometimes wait more than an hour for a game on weekends, it's only natural to wonder. Well, for a hint, swing by the illuminated courts almost any night of the week. And there they are, sitting under the... More »

The price sounds a trifle steep, but these are not just any chocolate truffles: blended with the high-quality Guittard chocolate is a judicious quantity of powdered cannabis sativa. Shades of Alice B. Toklas. Ah, only in San Francisco.
