What do ex-KPRC news anchor Linda Lorelle, former political candidate Maurice Duhon (a.k.a. Cornbreadd) and Houston Chronicle political cartoonist Nick Anderson have in common? They have all been drawn into the web of Liz Magic Laser. In her... More »
Catastrophic Theatre has announced its fifth season in which it's bringing back a recent success (There Is a Happiness That Morning Is) , presenting two world premieres (Tamarie Cooper is Old as Hell ... More »
I was introduced to Keren Cytter before the opening of her solo show, "Video Art Manual." She was standing on the loading front of DiverseWorks and asking who had given that "I have a dream" speech. I told her "Martin Luther King." "Really?" she... More »

DiverseWorks commissioned sculptor Tony Feher to create an interactive installation with a very specific purpose: consider how his work might relate to live performance. The resulting ''Tony Feher: Free Fall'' combines art, dance, music and... More »
One of the best spaces in Houston.
Great organization. Great curatorial decisions.
After making an international name for himself as a graffiti artist and leader of Aerosol Warfare, GONZO247 branched out into new territory and began curating shows for other walls. Most notable was this year's "Grandalism" series at DiverseWorks, a program of commissioned works by individual artists who, in turn, each showed oversize works outside the DW building. This summer, Article (Phillip Orlando Perez) was in the spotlight. His work included the colorful Mayan Day of the Dead, a... More »

For Johnson's performance, there was a heavy premium on sound, which was partially created, in loop format, by a live duo. Thanks to the space's acoustically... More »
Ben Tecumseh DeSoto and Ann Walton Sieber's photography exhibit "Understanding Poverty" at DiverseWorks was harrowing for its unflinching look at Houston's homeless. The show chronicled, from the late '80s to today, the story of Judy Pruitt, a.k.a. "Snow," an abandoned street kid begging, tricking and stealing to survive, as well as that of Ben White, a homeless man DeSoto and Sieber followed. The photos delved into the traumatized psychology of poverty and revealed hard truths about the... More »
DiverseWorks A visiting performance artist once sent a note to DiverseWorks saying, "Once you've done DiverseWorks, you've done Texas." That's a mighty strong statement, but we agree that everyone should "do" DiverseWorks. Now in its 21st year, the funky, intimate performance space has brought consistently challenging and groundbreaking contemporary works to Houston. Homegrown shows like the experimental electronic music festival "Twelve Minutes Max" take shape here each season. But... More »
