With no indication of its existence save two bougainvillea bushes guarding the door, Dick's Hideaway is a secluded reserve for those in the know. This bar and restaurant was once the spillover lounge for Richardson's, the popular restaurant that went up in smoke in July 2009, but now it's the sole attraction for people seeking Richardson's New Mexican fare. The main restaurant's kitchen was spared (lucky for us) and Dick's continues to serve food and daily drink specials to suits looking for a respite from the rat race. Despite its compact size -- a bar, three tables, and an adjoining party/dining room -- the warm wood, candles, and low light mean patrons will get familiar with each other fast as they crane their heads to see the blackboard specials or watch the tasty grub being cooked on the grill. Folks come from miles around for a giant lunchtime portion of Chile Adovada. (Served with one of the specialty tequilas, this makes a perfect early dinner too) For Breakfast, check out some of the southwest's best huevos rancheros or tuck into the Eggs Benedict, spiced up with hot jalapenos.

It wasn't until a few years ago that getting late-night eats in the Valley meant hitting up a 24-hour chain restaurant (Oh, boy, another Belgian Waffle Slam) or picking through the contents of your re... More »
Lucky for us, the fire that took down the original location of Richardson's in 2009 spared the kitchen, meaning its secluded spillover lounge, Dick's Hideaway, could keep on serving up its crazy-good New Mexican fare for breakfast. Breakfast is served every day from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and diners can grab one of the few available seats (and get familiar with their neighbors, fast) before selecting from platefuls of exceptional eats like pork chops braised in green chile with eggs, huevos... Dick's Hideaway's modern New Mexican eats include some pretty amazing chiles rellenos. You won't find any heavy, cheese-stuffed poblano peppers breaded and deep-fried here. At Dick's, the New Mexican take on the traditional rellenos come packed with your choice of five different fillings, and since you get two per relleno plate, you get to mix and match. They still have the standard (cheese-filled), but we recommend the tender, flavorful duck or smoked turkey. Beef tenderloin and pork aren't... More »
When Richardson's, one of our favorite Valley restaurants, went up in flames a couple of summers ago, we were heartbroken -- not only because we loved Richardson Browne's spicy New Mexican food so much, but because we figured his tiny sister restaurant, Dick's Hideaway, was destroyed, too, as they share the same strip mall on the northwest corner of 16th Street and Bethany Home Road. Thankfully, Dick's was spared, and we found ourselves right back at the copper-plated bar once again,... More »
The unforgettable carne adovada at Dick's Hideaway is the same recipe that used to be served at the late, great (and soon-to-reopen, in a different location) Richardson's. When that restaurant succumbed to fire last year, we were beyond relieved that our favorite dish could still be had at the Hideaway. Why? It's the kind of food that revives you when you're hungover or fills your belly when you're ready for a night of drinking or simply puts a smile on your face on any otherwise uneventful... More »
When word spread in the summer of 2009 that our beloved Richardson's had been destroyed by fire, we had one question: What about Dick's? Over the years, we loved Richardson Browne's New Mexican cuisine, served with his own brand of fire and, thankfully, very good margaritas to wash it down. But our true love is Dick's. The speakeasy-esque spot around the corner from Richardson's survived intact, and it's still our favorite spot to grab a bar stool for an after-work drink or gather folks for... More »
We love hanging out in nice places with our friends. The trouble is, nice places usually don't want us.Dick's Hideaway has become our personal haunt when we've got a group of up to 25 party pals. There's a $500 minimum to use the room, but divided among our cohorts, that comes to only $20 each, and the money is applied to food and drink (the contract lets us know the fee can be used to cover damage to the room, too, but we've never tested it).The place is just too cool, hidden behind a... How cool is it to take a sudden turn, open a door that looks as if it leads to nowhere, and announce to your companion that you've arrived at your highly select dining secret? This private party room is a little hole in the wall. It's a hidden hole in the wall, in fact, behind a door set invisibly into the paneled wood wall of the tiny bar called Dick's Hideaway. Making it to Dick's Hideaway is difficult enough on its own -- there's no sign outside. And there's not even a doorknob for the... More »
To say that this private party room is a little hole in the wall is entirely accurate. It's hidden, in fact, behind a door set inconspicuously into the paneled wood wall of the tiny bar called Dick's Hideaway. There's no sign anywhere -- not even outside, for the bar itself. You've just got to know where to look. The search is worth the effort, unveiling a completely charming, comfortable room seating up to 25 people around a grand, copper-topped table and at comfy booth tables lining the...
