Greater Than Social Club

8:00 p.m. first Wed. of every month @ Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret

Live music and standup comedy have flirted with each other for the better part of the last decade, but this cultural mash-up typically happens only in indie-rock clubs and low-rent DIY spaces. This year, however, the phenomenon has matured to the point of getting some downtown representation.

“In my experience, music and standup comedy go together like peanut butter and broken glass,” says Andrew Orvedahl, host of the Greater Than Social Club, a monthly comedy and music event debuting this week at Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret. “Usually, they are horrible together, but there’s no reason they have to be. This venue is perfect for it; people can sit and quietly enjoy the show instead of standing and talking through the comedy."

Orvedahl hosts and make a few jokes before introducing just one comedian, who does a twenty- to thirty-minute set. After that, there is just one more act, he says, “so instead of being act after act after act, it’s a ninety-minute show, which is perfect. It’s a Wednesday night, so it’s a nice mid-week entertainment that won’t keep you out until the wee hours.”

Tonight’s Greater Than will feature Adam Cayton-Holland, Christine Buchele and host Kristin Rand, with music from The Blue Rider and Mike Clark and the Sugar Sounds. Lannie’s is at 1601 Arapahoe Street; tickets are $10, and the show begins at 8 p.m. For more information, visit www.lannies.com.
