The menu at Deluxe is almost a parody, a page stolen out of the Jonathan Waxman/Jeremiah Tower playbook from 1989. But from your first taste of any of the small plates, big plates and apps, everything suddenly seems less like a robbery than a pitch-perfect homage to the original brilliance of California Cuisine. In his intimate, sleek storefront space, chef/owner Dylan Moore reminds us that everything good about a thing-gone-wrong can be recovered and made new again by a talented man who knows exactly what's worth saving.
While Dylan Moore, the chef/owner of Deluxe and Delite, dumped his food truck earlier this summer and shuttered Deluxe Burger last month, he isn't lazing on a beach somewhere in the tropics, sipping u... More »
No. 63: Bouillabaisse from DeluxeIn 2004, when Dylan Moore opened Deluxe on a stretch of Broadway that had yet to burgeon, he wasn't entirely sure his moody little food temple was going to make it, ... More »
Seven years and lots of leopard carpet mileage later, Deluxe, Dylan Moore's (formerly) moody restaurant on SoBo, is getting a major makeover -- and a new menu. Moore, who also runs Delite, the loung... More »

We like to live dangerously by hopping on a stool and taking in the controlled anarchy of an exhibition kitchen, specifically one that's as up-close and personal as the copper-topped chef's counter -- the only thing separating the cooks from the customers -- at Deluxe. It's pockmarked, scratched and a tight squeeze, with only a half-dozen seats, but it's also the best seat in the house for bantering with the crew, headlined by executive chef Dylan Moore, whose appreciation for... In 2003, when Dylan Moore opened Deluxe on a stretch of South Broadway that was better known for its bar brawls than its restaurants, he knew was taking a risk. But his first menu, a straight-ahead California board, was a quick hit. Since then, even as he's added new ventures (Delite next door, Deluxe Burger over on East Colfax), he's occasionally added new dishes to Deluxe's lineup -- but the one constant has been the masa-fried oyster shooters, which are so brain-numbingly... It seems impossible, but Deluxe has managed to get better over the past few years. That's saying something, because it was pretty damn good to begin with and has always been one of our favorite spots for kicking back and treating ourselves. The menu -- a kind of Bizarro World take on the California Cuisine revolution, cooked as if the intervening twenty years never happened -- is short and tight, just right for grazing (oyster shooters, served in pho spoons) or for going all out. While the... More »
Sex and food are powerful motivators, and no restaurant combines these two things better than Deluxe. There are high-backed banquettes in front, cozy two-tops in the back, leopard-print carpets, dim lights and cool jazz drooling from hidden speakers, all of which combine to showcase chef Dylan Moore's beautiful and overwhelmingly sensuous take on the California Cuisine revolution of the mid-'80s. Presented with a modernist's flair, the menu is arranged by small plates and entrees, with... More »
Dating is awkward enough -- you might as well do it in a place that gives you the edge. If you're a fella, what will impress the girl/guy of your dreams? Candles and soft music? Roofies and a prison tattoo? And if you're of the female persuasion, will your date be confused by any place setting more complicated than a paper napkin and a spork? Deluxe answers all those questions. The vibe is cool and sultry without screaming end-of-date sex. The lights are dim, the seating intimate -- but not... More »
Dylan Moore is one weird cat. He bailed on a promising career as a young chef, turning his back on the food world just when he, and California Cuisine, were at the height of their powers. But after more than a decade on the outside, he's picked up right up where he left off. At Deluxe, the food sometimes seems like we're still in 1991 in the L.A. Basin. This oddness is most pronounced in the masa-fried oyster shooters on Deluxe's small-plates menu -- an offering right out of the Jeremiah... More »
I'd never really given South Broadway a thought in the gourmet food arena but Deluxe might be the spot to change that perspective. The food is unreal - SO good and they have a small but stellar selection of small and big plates. Try the paella but go ahead and plan on sharing it, the large plates are huge so have the kitchen split it for you.
