Description

As its name implies, the Delmar is really two places in one space. From 5 till 10 p.m., it serves solid, satisfying dinner fare, including small, tasty pizzas and a delicious beef tenderloin stuffed with crawfish and served in a mushroom demi-glace over the biggest potato pancake you might ever see. From 10 till close, it's one of the most crowded spots in town, thanks to its 3 a.m. license. You can still order a pizza, though, or one of the crowd-pleasing appetizers. Or you can just sit back with a drink and feast on the always-entertaining clientele.

  • 2011 | Best French Fries

When a plate of French fries is prepared correctly, it's difficult to improve on the result. The potatoes must be freshly cut, not frozen. They shouldn't be served in the form of giant slabs with flakes of uncooked potato in the middle, but they shouldn't be matchsticks, either. The exterior should be crisp without being greasy. The interior should be just soft enough to remind you that at one point in its evolution, your fry was a bona fide vegetable. And, of course, there should be a light... More »

  • 2007 | Best Drink Special

Is it just a mirage, or are the wine prices at restaurants going up faster than gas at the pump Seems like only yesterday a glass of vino'd run you four or five bucks; now you practically need a money-market account to suck down a couple of after-work cabs. In belt-tightening times like these, turn to the Delmar Restaurant & Lounge. Here a ten-spot will cover you -- for almost three glasses! And we don't mean during a single special hour, one day a week, when there's a full moon. As a... More »

  • 2006 | Best Bouncer

Mr. Clean-bald, six-foot-four and, as some bartenders say, "two tons of trouble," Dan "Danny Mack" McGuire has been bouncing the riff-raff out of the Delmar for more than six years. Yet despite his overbearing appearance, he manages to keep things smoove. Says one staff member: "Even though he's a bouncer, he never raises his voice. He always does his job professionally." What's more, this muscle man has a sense of humor, joking with the patrons and honoring the exasperating, "I'm stepping... More »

  • 2004 | Best Lounge

We go to lounges for many reasons: to listen to music, to sip bright-hued cocktails, to chat with friends. To step out, and then to sit down. To lounge. And when we seek the Platonic ideal of loungin' in the Lou, we head to the Delmar. Looking for all the world like a collaborative design effort between Raymond Chandler and Quentin Tarantino, the Delmar exudes noir cool. The deep red booths, the mirrored bar, the banquettes and abstract art in the back room: There's not a bad seat in the... More »

  • 2000 | Best Waitperson

Jay Jackson -- this man could sell a plate of fried fleas. But he now manages and waits tables at the Delmar Restaurant & Lounge in the U. City Loop and instead handles carefully designed plates of culinary accomplishment. Jackson, a waiter and bartender for most of his life, has worked everywhere from underground rock & roll clubs in Los Angeles to jazz bars in New York City. He knows his liquor, his spices, his table settings and his red wines. He's been a bouncer, a soldier and an... More »

All's Fare in Love and Noir

It was a rotten evening — cold, ice on the ground—and I was in a rotten mood — cold, ice in my heart, certain that no one but me understood the absurdity of the human condition — so of course I ended up visiting the Delmar Restaurant and Lounge. ... More »

There are only two ways to appreciate whiskey -- and we're talking bourbon here, folks, and its country cousin, Tennessee sippin' whiskey: neat, where the full burn of the libation's alcohol content can overtake the complex sweetness of the corn d... More »

In this season of sniffles, head colds and tummyaches, it's consoling to reminisce about the bland, pulpy foods our mothers served us on TV trays when we were confined to bed in our footed flannel pajamas. I used to delight in spooning chilled tap... More »

Fun place to have a drink or two. Atmosphere changes dramatically before and after the DJ gets there. If you want to see the DJ, get there early to save the $3.

I like this place because it has decent dinner option, good jazz and is located in the loop very metro friendly if you want to have a few drinks. Service is better when you sit inside. Sometimes the Jazz is really awesome!
