Most major cities have publicly funded museums — giant freaking buildings full of art. We do things differently in Miami, where private citizens with great art collections step up, open them to the public, and offer tours for school kids. That's culture, baby. For instance, the De La Cruz Collection has a multistory, 30,000-square-foot warehouse at 41st Street on the east side of North Miami Avenue in the Design District. They have a huge collection of internationally renowned art work, but they also show much love to Miami artists. Submit through their website your portfolio alongside a proposal for an installation, and they might give you up to $1,600 to make it a reality in their project room. Do it before the end of January for a chance to make it happen this March. They rotate projects every few months. We recently checked the place out and saw a lot of cool stuff.
