Considered a neighborhood classic, Day by Day Café is on the end of an unassuming block that’s home to a thrift store and a yoga studio. But inside, you’ll find patrons happy from all-day breakfast, coffee at the ready, and more than a couple vegetarian options on their diner-style menu. Try the Earth Breakfast ($8.50) of two scrambled eggs in hash browns with onions and cheese, served with whole grain toast, or the avocado burger topped with avocado, onions, and sour cream ($8.75). Grab a booth, or if it’s nice out, a spot on the patio, and settle in, because this is the kind of comfort you’re not going to want to leave quickly. The policy of only accepting cash or checks (what year is this?) frustrates many, but it’s a hurdle worth leaping.

This sunny, cheerful, spacious St. Paul breakfast institution is so overrun with toys that we used to think that a pack of overachieving preschoolers ran it. Toys occupy every nook.
