Whether you are chasing away a hangover with a medianoche sandwich at 2 a.m. or sitting down to a full dinner, David's Café II serves some of the tastiest Cuban food this side of Havana. And it's open 24/7, making it the late-night/early-morning destination for strong coffee and comfort food. The vibe is all about gorging on hefty platters of Cuban favorites while reading the paper and overhearing local politics. This is where cops, politicians, and movers and shakers go when they crave black bean soup ($4), arroz con pollo ($9.45), tostones ($4.95), Cuban sandwiches ($8.95), and tres leches ($5.10). Breakfast is hearty, too, with bone-sticking options such as French toast ($5.95), omelets ($6.50), or steak and eggs ($9.25), all of which are served with orange juice, coffee, and toast. There's free Wi-Fi in the sparse dining room, so you can loiter all day. If you're in a rush, grab a Cuban hamburger with fried plantain chips ($8.55) from the lunch counter. And if you're in the mood for something trendy, try the mini Cuban sliders ($8.55), which were featured at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival's Burger Bash. Wash it all down with a sweet mamey shake ($5.25) or an ice-cold beer.

In 1994, back when Lincoln Road was just emerging from its rutted, nearly abandoned phase, Alfredo Gonzalez and his sons Alex and Adrian opened David's Café II. Their original David's Café had been up and running on Collins Avenue since 1977, offering Cuban fare in a diner setting. But the family was looking toward the future, and it looked to be on the Road. They were right. Their business has only grown since then, expanding to add a café to David's II in 1999. But the...
